So I went to my monthly appt with my OB yesterday. LO?s heartbeat sounded good and 1st part of sequential screen looks good. Dr. told me that my bloodwork came back showing that I?m not immune to Rubella (German measles). I worked with a RE in order to get pregnant and they look so much blood at the beginning and tested me for everything under the sun, I would have thought that they would have tested me for this. Dr. said the vaccine is not safe for administration during pregnancy so they will give me a shot at the hospital once LO arrives. I know I got vaccinated when I was a baby. She said some people just ?lose their immunity? and that it?s ok to breastfeed with the the shot in your system.
So I?ve probably not been immune for a while and managed to live a happy and healthy life up until now. But now I know and it?s hard not to be anxious. Hoping for a healthy pregnancy with no exposure to rubella (German measles).
Re: Rubella (German measles)
It's not uncommon for people born between 1970 & 1989. and got their MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine at around 1 year old, then it is possible that they do not have immunity. It wasn't until 1989 that a second dose of the vaccine at age 4 or so was given.
I was born in 1971 and only got one dose of the mmr vaccine as a kid. There was a mumps outbreak in 2009 and my mother (a retired nurse) suggested I get a booster because she knew we were TTC. I ended up getting the MMR vaccine and getting pg with DS that same cycle (we didn't really try that month, but we didn't use protection either). I was terrified that something would be wrong with DS because I got the vaccine about 10d before I got pg with DS, but he was fine.
Just get the vaccine right after lo is delivered. Obviously try to limit your exposure to these diseases in the meantime.
I am also one that has no immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella. Add to that list Chicken Pox and Fifth's Disease! Can't imagine this as I've been teaching for 17 years! Never got any of them.
I will be getting MMR, Chicken Pox, and Whooping Coubgh (pertussis) vaccine once baby is born.
Good luck!
