s/o things my pedi told me - for picky eaters

I know some people have asked about their child barely eating, so I thought I'd share. Feel free to add any ideas/tips, etc.

M's 12m appt was yesterday. I specifically asked about nutrition b/c M is the world's pickiest eater. She will take a nibble here, nibble there, but after two bites it all gets thrown on the floor, spit out, and generally refused.

Pedi said to do 3 meals a day with a tablespoon of each food group. Put it on her tray so she's in control of it (I've been sitting her on my lap for a while b/c she throws a fit in her seat). When she's obviously done, take her out. If half an hour later she shows signs of hunger, put her back and offer her the same food. No snacks (goldfish, cheerios, etc) in between. Nurse 3-4 times a day (with/near each meal and at bedtime if desired), but not overnight (yeah, I'm finally getting around to nightweaning/sleep training).

And the pedi was super supportive of continuing to BF! YAY!

  • Also, for those concerned about weight gain, the pedi said that it takes more calories to add length than width. If your child is getting taller, s/he's getting what s/he needs so no need to worry.

I've never heard that before--very interesting!

Cool!  At her one year checkup yesterday she's grown 1 1/2 inches in the last 3 months but barely gained any weight at all...she dropped in her percentiles but the pedi wasn't concerned and said it's quite common...especially with them being so mobile.

  • My pedi has always said "as long as they have grown (in any form) they are good" and I've always liked that about her.  DD2 is the "runt" of my babies. She is pounds and inches smaller than all the other kids at the same ages (DS3 is only 3 pounds smaller than her at this point) she "grows" at each appointment, and she is a good eater so she isn't worried.

I do agree with offering small portions and offering the same foods later with no snacks.  All of my kids are good eaters and I attribute a lot of that to the way I offered foods, when and how I fed them.
