Are any of you planning of traveling with LO this summer?

We're flying into my hometown for 3 weeks 6 weeks after my edd. Normally, I would be over the moon to be leaving the island for so long. I'm a little apprehensive about leaving. We don't know exactly when she'll be born, and of course if her health is a factor at all, we'll cancel the trip. I feel that this trip is just added stress. What should travel with? Obviously, I can't bring my whole nursery, but it's not like this is a quick weekend trip. Should I pack diapers or just buy them when we arrive? Do I pack a base for the carseat? How many changes of clothes would I need for a 13 plane ride? Should I bring a stroller? My mom has a stroller and pack n play, but I don't know what kind of stroller it is. We talked to the doctor about her 2 month shots. They don't like to delay the shots, and it was suggested if she'll be more than a week past her 2 month old birthdate, we should contemplate getting them done while on vaca. Unless she is born within the next couple of days, this shouldn't be a problem. Do any stm have advice? I'm such a nervous nelly. There's still 7 weeks more me work myself up. The tickets have already been purchased, so the only way I can justify canceling is for medical reasons.

Re: Are any of you planning of traveling with LO this summer?

  • we're planning on driving to north carolina (from CT) for my niece's baptism in the end of july, so she would be about 5 to 6 weeks old. we'll be driving with my parents (no one in my family likes flying) we're going to take 2 days to get down there. but i figure probably best time for long distance traveling when she'll be sleeping most of the time.

  • We're driving from Texas back to Kansas in early-to-mid July.  LO will be 3-4 weeks old, depending on if we go back 4th of July week or the week after.  We'll be spendign part of the week in my hometown, and the rest in our old city/DH's hometown area.  We'll need a pack-n-play at my mom's house, but not in our old area, so we still need to take one.  Since we're driving, we'll probably try to take most things we need, but if we run out of diapers or something, just buy there.  If we were flying, I'd buy diapers when we got there.

  • We're planning on traveling on a plane but not for a three months probably after LO is born.  I'm a FTM but I would buy diapers and wipes and disposable items when you get to your hometown.  I would bring the car seat, base and stroller if the one your mom has isn't ok for a 6 week old.  I wouldn't worry about packing everything b/c you are going to a place that you can buy what you need if you forget it.  Once your LO is here for a few weeks you'll know better what you need and don't I think.
  • This isn't quite the same situation, but I flew transatlantic from London to Chicago by myself with DD when she was 10 weeks old. She'd already had her shots by then, so I can't comment on that subject.

As for the packing, my advice would be to pack as lightly as you can get by with. I did not bring a stroller or car seat. I carried DD around in a sling, which was also useful as they make you hold the baby during take off and landing. I had reserved a skycrib but they won't let you use it anytime the "fasten seatbelt" sign is on. My parents borrowed a stroller for us to use during our visit and bought a convertible car seat. We figured it would be worth it for other visits in the future.

For the flight, I breastfed her but also brought along a couple of pre-sterilized bottles and cartons of ready-to-use formula. Pacifiers were a godsend.

If you're using disposable diapers, just bring what you need for the flight and buy the rest when you arrive. Same goes for anything else that's disposable.

  • I'll be flying to Iowa (with a connection) when LO is 8 weeks old.  It's totally doable.  I flew with DD by myself when she was 12 weeks old.  It's actually easier to travel with an infant than with my DD, who is a spirited toddler.  And we'll be staying at a hotel, so there won't be an option for someone to have supplies there for us.  I'm not too worried.  With an infant that young, things just work out.

If your Mom has the big things, you should be fine.  You'll figure out what is absolutely essential in the first few weeks and then you can send her out to get what you need.  Our parents got all their stuff second hand and on consignment, so that it wasn't a huge expense for them.
