New Running Shoe problem

Hi ladies, I'm hoping one of you can help me out here- I went and got fitted for new running shoes on Saturday and used them just to walk on Sunday for 3 miles. Sunday is usually a "rest/recovery" day for me, but I was too excited about the darn new shoes.

I now have a large blister on my heel. How long do they usually take to heal, and how long should I wait to run again? I'm worried that if I stop for too long, or take that break in my running routine that it will be more difficult to continue.

Any advice or tips?

Re: New Running Shoe problem

  • Yay for new running shoes!  I hate getting blisters.  My advice is probably wrong but it works for me. I usually pop them a day or two later, keep a sports/ waterproof band aide on it when I'm wearing shoes, and keep it uncovered at night.  I think they last sometimes a week.  I hope it feels better soon!!

I don't have any advice on the blisters -- I've been lucky enough to avoid them. When you tried out the running shoes in the store (I hope you actually did run inside or outside the store), did you notice any areas of your foot where they might rub? Did you try them on with the same kind of socks you'd normally wear with them for a run/walk?

Also, what kind of socks do you typically wear when you run? The best are any type of technical quick-wicking socks rather than cotton. I like Thorlos for synthetics as well as SmartWool (super comfy, non-itchy wool, believe it or not). Maybe that's why I've been able to keep from getting blisters?

  • Thanks for the advice, I did try them out on the treadmill in the store, and didn't notice a problem, but it may have been the socks.. I wasn't planning on running, so  I just had cotton socks to wear on Sunday morning..

My 3 year old stepped on the back of my foot yesterday and popped the blister thought (ouch) so right now I am holding off on the running until it feels about back to normal.. Uugh.. My goal is to start up again on Thursday, because I am registered for a 5k on Saturday! yikes!!

  • I'm pretty sure they make band aids to cover blisters. I think that's what I did last time I had one. As long as it doesn't hurt to bend your ankles at all (if it's on the back), I would cover it up with a thick band aid, make sure your shoes are tied tight enough and try it out. If it hurts, stop.

  • I got a horrible blister the week of my half and used mole skin to cover it.  It is thicker than a bandaid and I think sticks better.  I wrapped my toe for my half and had no issues.
