Daycare check in

I'm just curious how your loved ones (and you) did with the transition to daycare. Share your stories please and easy my mind. I'm lucky enough to not have to do this until August when school starts back up for me (teacher). But I feel like I'm on the verge of having an anxiety attack every time I think about it.

Re: Daycare check in

  • I'm doing a slow transition. I'm working half-time for a month so I still get to be home a couple of days a week and that made it a lot easier for me. Right now, my mom and her friend are watching him but he goes to big boy daycare in a couple of weeks, which I'm kind of looking forward to for the convenience but it's a little weird since it's not my mom! So far though, it really isn't bad. One thing that's nice is now I feel like my real job is at home and work is somewhere I go in between that time. It's helped me not to get so stressed out about work stuff and to just take it easy, which is not the way I normally function.

Another thing that helps is that Alexander is always happy when I drop him off. I think it would be a lot harder if he was having a freak out. This way, when I leave him, the last thing I see is his smiling face so I feel good that he's happy. :)

  • I luckily won't have to do this until next February, and I am so not looking forward to it.  I used to work in a day care, so you would think that I would understand that kids cry when their parents are there but 99% of the time they stop within 5 minutes of parents leaving.  Now I totally understand why the parents have such a hard time leaving when their child is crying.

  • I was a wreck for weeks before he went to the sitter last week just thinking about leaving him and cried all last Monday whenever someone would ask me if I was ready to go back. Well I dropped him off last Tuesday, teared up a little bit when I was leaving him, but it really helped me that he was laughing and smiling when I dropped him off and didn't cry at all. I called Tuesday and Wednesday around lunchtime and then decided that if something was wrong, the sitter would call me and let me know. He has done awesome there and actually sleeps better for her than he did for me! Going back to work was exactly what I needed to keep my sanity.

The anticipation of doing it was way worse than actually dropping him off.

  • I went half days at first which was great. He was pretty much asleep the whole time. But when I started full days, he started having issues. He wouldn't sleep for her because he was watching the other 2 little girls and he started not eating from her. He went all day thursday without eating from her and he was fighting his dad when we were home. I was freaking out so Thursday evening I spent the whole evening holding him and doing skin-to-skin and I fed him all of his bottles for the weekend, which he took with no problems. Yesterday, he ate from his sitter with no problems and she moved his PnP into a bedroom so he could sleep unintterupted. I think he was just nosey and exhausted and frustrated from not having me. Hopefully, he won't regress this week because he will be there all 5 days...

My only suggestion is to start a week or 2 before going half days. It was a lot easier for me knowing I would see him in a few hours. Good Luck!

  • My daughter just started dc yesterday so I can't give a ton of advice.  I did a trial run last Friday and stayed the whole time she was there so I could talk to the ladies and get a feel for how things run.  Then the night before I wrote a nice note out that included some tips about my daughter's sleeping, eating, and diapering.  Most of it was touched on on Friday, but I thought it was a good reminder.

The morning of was really tough...I cried while doing my makeup, changing and feeding her.  My husband was wonderful and went into work late so he could come with me to drop her off.  I did cry as soon as I handed her over, but they were all so wonderful and said to call or drop by as often as I wanted.  I only called twice (yesterday) and once today.

Today was much better, and I think it helped that I got good sleep and lots of snuggle time with her last night and this morning.  Anyways, I do miss her like crazy and I'm sure I'll have days where I regress.  And that's okay!

Just enjoy every minute you have with your LO and try not to think/stress about daycare.  As the ladies at daycare said to me yesterday, it's harder on you (the parent) than them.  GL!

  • Thank you all ladies. I guess I just convinced myself that no one can get her to nap except me. And I just imagine her in a crib screaming her head off. I need to try and stop worrying so much.

I thought the same thing and even though he is the only baby that his sitter is watching, I still didn't want him to lay in his crib and scream because she couldn't get him to sleep, got frustrated with him and just put him down. He made a liar out of me when I said he didn't like to nap and has been taking at least two, 2.5 hour naps every day for her.
