Names similar to Brennan

I went to college with a female Brennan, and that's my only IRL association with the name. However, after researching it I've realized it's traditionally a boy's name. We are having so much trouble with girl names that we both like, and while we both like this name, I don't like it enough to perpetuate the boy names for girls trend.

What are some girl names that are similar to Brennan? Our last name is one syllable, ending in s, and of Scottish origin. We seem to prefer Irish, Scottish, British, and Welsh names.

  • I absolutely adore the name Brynn!

  • How about Brynn or Brenna?

I know a couple of girl babies with these names, and they could be a good option for you if you like Brennan.

  • I really like the name Brenna. I believe it's Irish or Scottish. I knew a girl named Brenna in high school and she was really sweet, so I have a good association with it.

There is also the more American-ized Brianna or Breanna. Or John Edwards' mistress's name is Brielle.

  • I have a cousin named Brenna and a niece Breanna. I also love Brynn.
  • DH and I fell in love with this name when we were visiting family in Ireland and his grandma showed us her family's graves in a cemetery and their last name was Brennan. DH loves it for a girl, I prefer it for a boy but totally agree with you on not perpetuating the boy for a girl trend. It's a fun name, but I hate every other boy name on a girl so I can't do it myself, even if it's uncommon. I do like Brynn, Brenna, Brianna and the other suggested Irish names (Adair, etc). Good luck!

ETA: And I think it's great you're avoiding the boy name for girl thing. Brennan is definitely all boy to me, and I'd be confused if I met a female Brennan (and wonder why they didn't go for Brenna... I also happen to know both a Brennan and a Brenna - male and female respectively).

  • Thanks ladies. I don't hate Brenna, but it just doesn't do it for me for some reason. I think I have to have that "n" on the end. Brynn is lovely, but I worry about a one syllable first name with our one syllable last name. Too short? Think Kate Moss. Not awful, but I don't know... lacking?

  • I like a PP suggestion of Delaney.  It's of the origin you are looking for and reminds me of a Brennan-like name.  But it sounds like a girls name, Brennan will always be a boys name to me - or maybe you can switch and use it as your mn if you love it.

  • My DS is Brennan and DH and I love it.  A friend recently named her DD Brenna which I agree, I'm not a huge fan of.  I like Brynn better.
