Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9mo checkup and Lead test?

Hey ladies,

We just had DS's 9mo appointment. Everything went great and he is healthy and happy and didn't even cry after the shot. Just before we were leaving though, the Doc let us know that we need to take DS to get a lead test..... she explained that most insurance doesn't cover it and we will have to take him to the hospital to get it done. Also she told us that the test is to make sure the baby doesnt have any lead poisoning from being at day care or crawling around outside or the building we live in. Thing is, DS doesn't go to day care, never crawls outside unless on a huge blanket that he doesn't make it off of and the building we live in is lead free.

Is this really a necessary test? I will of course do anything for DS but I just wonder if it is truly necessary with all the factors being as they are.

Would love to hear your experience.

Thanks!

  • Thank you!!! I am so glad it is not more then that. The Doc had we worried that is was going to be some astronomical fee for a test he probably doesn't need in the first place. I will call the insurance to see if they cover it though.

    Thanks again!

IMO It makes total sense if the place you live is old or if they go to day care where they may be exposed to it, but for DS, short of someone sticking it in his face, there is such a minute chance that I just wanted to make sure before we did it... plus this poor child has been stuck enough since birth... I don't look forward to making him do any tests that are not necessary.

  • Depending on what state you live in, it could be required by law. I know in MA it is required.

my ds is getting his at 1 yr. I think bc it is required(ma. law) I think insurance covers it. Like pp said, you should just call to check on the price. Your dr. could of at least said, you may have to pay but it is not that expensive instead of worrying you. Sorry that happened.
