Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can a 10 month old get too much sleep?

Trust me, I am not complaining, but our LO sleeps a lot!  Most nights he sleeps 7:30-8:00 or 9:00 and then takes a 2-3 hour morning nap and a 1 1/2-2 hour afternoon nap.  It seems like a lot to me, but I don't know if there's any real cause for concern or not.

  • Let me say first, I'm soooo jealous. Now to answer your question, I think it's fine. At this age I think(rough estimate) they should be sleeping 11-14 hours at night and two naps 1-2hr during the day.

  • I am sooo jealous, but I honestly have no idea if that is normal or not.  My LO sleeps about 10 hours at night and about 3 hours total during the day (so a total of 13 hours).

My son goes to bed between 7-8. He gets up once for a bottle quickly between 5-8 am. Then gets up 10:30 for breakfast and a bottle, literally only up for 15-20 mins. Then goes back to bed until 12-1 ish. Then gets up and goes for a nap from about 2-430. Then he's up until bed. I don't force him to sleep or anything, he's just naturally sleeping his whole life away lol. But I'm not concerned. Might just be a growth spurt and maybe next week he will be done napping, who knows? Children are mystery!

  • Just roll with it.  If its working for your LO than they need it.  My older daughter slept like that and still (at almost 4) takes 3-4 hour naps.  #2 doesn't sleep nearly as much...I guess that's what I get for having such a great sleeper the first time around. Enjoy it!!

  • I definitely wouldn't worry about it. I was worried my son wasn't getting enough seep but pedi said it was impossible.  He sleeps for about 10-12 hours a night on a good night and only naps for about an hour a day......yup, an hour total!!!  You want to trade? Lol
  • Our sleep schedule is about the same.  DD sleeps from about 8:30 at night until 7:30 in the morning and then has 2 , 1 1/2-2 hr naps during the day.

  • My handy chart suggests naps 3 hours total at 9 mos and 2.5 hours at 12 mos; overnight 11-12 hours.  I would think 4 hrs is within the bell curve.

My LO is napping 1-2 hrs in the morning and 2-3 in the afternoon.  So every day total 3 (often) to 5 (rarer) hrs.  She's having a bit of sleep regression, so her overnight is 10-11 hrs.  I keep thinking she'll be going to 1 nap a day soon, but I guess that's a ways out... or not... Wink

I wouldn't be concerned if your LO is happy and healthy in other ways!

  • My 11 month old sleeps from 6:30-5 or 6am, then takes 3 naps, each 1-1.5 hrs long. He gets tired after only being awake for 2 hours. I'm not complaining but sometimes its hard because he won't sleep anywhere but at home, so we have to schedule our day around his nap time.
  • I am jealous!

DS sleeps an average of 12.5 hours per day.  Usually on weekdays it's more like 12 hours (only takes a 30 min nap at daycare), and on weekends maybe 14.

  • My DD is 13 months old and does the same thing on weekends.  During the week she only takes one nap for 1-1 1/2 hours at daycare, and sleeps 12+ hours.

I think it's great!  My DD plays hard all day long.  She's been walking for months, so it's what her little body needs.

  • I asked my ped. at our 9m visit and said she should be sleeping around 12 hours per day including naps.  She sleeps 9-10 overnight and 2 naps.  He also said she'll transition to one nap at around 18m.  If she sleeps more, great.  I never wake her.  Sometimes her naps are shorter and she gets cranky.

  • Ok... your post makes me wanna cry and knock you out at the same time... My 11 month old has slept through the night ONCE since he was born.  Effffff...

But, really I am glad someone out there is getting some sleep at night!  I am sure there is no such thing as "too much sleep."  And, if so, it is probably like "too many fruits and veggies" or "too much fun and sun."

  • No.  Like adults, some babies are more "high sleep needs" than others.  As long as he seems happy and healthy, don't you dare worry that he is sleeping too much! :)

Also, for all you know he is waking several times during the night, even during those naps, and just being so quiet that you have no idea.  I used to think that DD slept until 8:00 until one day DH told me that he always hears her at 6:30 when he gets up, but she's not loud enough to wake me up (even through the monitor on full volume) until at least an hour later!

My daughter is the same. It kind of sounds like a lot to me too however if your baby is happy and is pretty active during his awake times, there's probably nothing to be concerned about.

  • I hate you.
