After 19 days in the hospital... birth story

Hi Everyone,

I'm not a frequent poster, but I do check in every now and then and read your ladies' posts.  I thought since my situation was a little unique I would post my birth story.

On November 5th (33w 5d), I came into the hospital for a routine Non-Stress Test.  While hooked up to the monitors, I had 6 or 7 contractions in about 25 minutes.  It was very strange because I felt all of the contractions while I was hooked up to the monitor, but didn't notice any on my own that morning.  So, the RN called my doctors and they asked for me to be sent to Labor & Delivery triage.  In triage, I was given fluid for about an hour and then had an internal.  I was dilated 1 cm.  I had just had an internal the day before and was completely closed so they knew that the contractions I was having were real labor.  So, they put me on magnesium and gave me the first steriod shot for the babies' lungs.  My doctor explained to me that they normally won't stop labor at 34 weeks for twins, but since I was slightly before that they wanted to see if the magnesium could stop it long enough for me to get both rounds of steriod shots.  They expected that I would deliver in the next day or so OR the contractions would stop and I would be sent home.

Being on the magnesium was pretty miserable.  I was hot and slightly nauseas.  The worst part was that I wasn't allowed out of bed for the slightly over 24 hours.  If I had to pee they set up a commode right next to my bed.  That whole night I got no sleep because they came in once and hour to check my vitals.  I was really hoping that the mag would stop my contractions and I could go home.  I have a two year old daughter who I was missing like crazy.

Well, 24 hours later after I got the second steriod shot - which hurt like he(( - they took me off the magnesium.  My contractions had stopped completely.  The doc did another internal and I was 3 cm.  At this point, a decision needed to be made.  Basically, the options were (1) perform the c-section and the deliver the babies, (2) send me home until the contractions started again, or (3) keep me in the hospital until the contractions started again.  The doctors didn't want to deliver me yet if they didn't have to.  At about 34 weeks the NICU docs expected that my babies would need to be in the NICU for 3 to 4 weeks.  The doctors were too afraid to send me home.  Baby A was breech and their biggest concern was if my water broke at home and the cord descended first.  Apparently, if the cord was the first thing to come down, they would have 10 minutes to deliver Baby A.  This would be really concerning since I live at least 10 minutes from the hospital.  So, it was decided that I would stay at the hospital.  The doctors set my expectations that the babies would probably be born in the next few days as it is common that even if labor is stopped it starts again within a week.

Well, as not to make this story longer, my labor never started again.  The doctors kept me in the hospital just in case.  At 35 weeks they decided that the plan would be to deliver me if my labor started or to deliver me at exactly 36 weeks if labor didn't start.  So, on Saturday November 22nd, I had a c-section to deliver the twins.

Ada Marie

5lbs, 9oz - 18 inches

Ryan James

5lbs, 2oz - 18 inches

While the 19 days I spent in the hospital before being discharged was one of the hardest things I ever had to endure (I was so sad without my daughter), it was well worth it.  The babies were a good size and came home the day after I did.  Ada didn't spend any time in the NICU and Ryan spent a little less than 48 hours.  They stayed an extra day under the lights because of jaundice.  They came home the day before Thanksgiving and gave me something to be really grateful for.  My dd is so happy their home and has shown no signs of jealousy.  She loves they very much and is already protective.

Thanks for reading if you got this far :)
