Book recommendations for newborn care/breastfeeding

I took a childbirth class but wasnt able to fit in a new born care or breast feeding class. I want to pick up a book or two on each that I can read ahead and highlight for quick reference post baby. Any recommendations on ones you liked?

 Thanks!!

  • Becoming Baby Wise - I have multiple friends that have used it; thier infants started sleeping through the night early on. It's a sleep method which basically teaches you to feed, play, sleep - so the baby doesn't get used to sleeping right after eating/ falling asleep on the breast.

It also touches on breast feeding, as well as infant issues with feeding. Both DH and I found it very helpful.

I know there will be some posters who say the book/ what they suggest isn't good for the baby, etc. but it has been modified from it's original edition which wasn't the best for the baby, and was actually recommended to myself (as well as my friends) by our OB's and pediatricians. I also have a nurse practioner friend who swears by it.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS.  IT MADE MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER WITH MY FIRST BABY AND I HAVE PASSED IT ON TO MANY NEW MOMMY FRIENDS.

  • For breastfeeding, if you aren't taking a class specifically on that, I recommend checking your local library for a breastfeeding class on DVD.  Honestly, over half of the class I went to was us watching a video.  I could have just watched the video.  Also, you may find a lot of tips on youtube as far as pumping and breastfeeding accessories.  I'm not sure how much you can get from a book on how to do it, but there are definitely books out there on troubleshooting during breastfeeding.
  • I'll second dr sears' baby book. Although I'll admit that it and baby wise are in near complete disagreement with each other (I've never used baby wise, but I'm reading it and find it very strange so far). Another that I enjoyed was Happiest Baby on the Block - it has to do with calming fussy babies (by Karp).
