Naps- set times or whenever?

I have the summer off and am trying to figure this whole nap thing out.  The first week or so she was teething so she used a pacifier to put herself to sleep (never used on prior or since) she doesn't want to be rocked anymore (and I am okay with that) but it only seems like she falls asleep in car rides or on walks and I do not want to start that habit.

Do you just go by LOs cues or do you have set times?

Re: Naps- set times or whenever?

  • Both kids go down for naps between 12:30 and 1 every day and sleep about three hours.  Been doing this for DD since she turned one and DS since about eight months.

Luckily she has been pretty consistent on her wake-up times during the week (6:15-6:30) and on the weekends.  On the weekends we put her down for a morning nap around 9:30-10:00 and she'll sleep anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours (very rare) and then she still takes an afternoon nap around 2:00-2:30 and that one is about 45 minutes to an hour.  Then she's ready for bed by 7:30.  I'm not sure how to start transitioning her to just one nap a day.  I should also mention she goes to daycare during the week and is not a good napper there, apparently just too much going on.

  • Nap #1 - 10:30-12:00

    Nap #2 - 3:00-5:00

These were set by her cues but stay pretty much exact every day.

  • We loosely follow 2-3-4 for naps and bedtime. He had dropped a nap for a while but now consistently needs/wants 2 again. I will have to get him transitioned to 1 shortly because DC only wants 1 nap/day. He naps around 930 and 2.

  • We go by his cues, around a set time. If that makes sense.

He usually goes down around 12, but we dont necessarily put him down right at 12, we wait until he acts tired. Sometimes its a bit before 12, sometimes after.

Some days he is tired at a completely off time, like today...9 am. He was a nightmare, so he got an early nap.

I follow cues (as does daycare). She tyipcally goes for her first nap around 10 or 11. And a second around 3ish.

  • I don't have set times, but DS takes 2-3 naps still, so what I do is lay him down when he acts tired.  If it happens to be around the times he does take his naps usually, I will leave him in there til he falls asleep which is usually 30 minutes with no fussing or crying.  If he whines, he stays in there, if he crys he gets to get up.  Usually it doesn't happen like that, he is very consistent with his 2-3 naps a day.

  • Both kids take a nap between 2 and 3pm sometime (usually closer to 2) and sleep for at least two hours. It's been DD's nap time since she was under 2yrs and DS got on the same schedule at about 7 months. He dropped a second nap a couple months ago.

  • DD seemed to set her own schedule of approx. 10-12 and 2-3:30 or 4 and doesn't do so well at showing cues so I just know that she probably needs to go down around those times.

  • Pretty much set times.  Sam goes down somewhere in the 9:00 hr for his first nap, and naps til somewhere in the 11:00 hr.  Then they both go down around 2pm for their afternoon nap.  Sam's usually up before 4:00; sometimes I end up waking Luke up at 5:00, since bedtime is at 7:30.

  • We also pretty much follow the 2-3-4 schedule which she seemed to create herself.  She's up between 6:30-7:30.  Both naps are generally 1 1/2 hours give or take.  I'm almost eager to get down to one nap a day b/c I feel like I can never do anything out of the house!

  • DD was napping really well with set times up until she turned 9 months. Ever since then, I've had to play it by ear and she either takes 1 OR 2 naps a day. She does really well with 1 nap a day, as long as it's like 2 hours in length and it's right in the middle of the day.

Then there are days that she'll need a morning nap around 9:30/10 am and she'll only sleep for an hour and then she will just not take a 2nd nap of the day. That's what happened today. She'll crash really early tonight, though.

I wish there was some more predictability. I can't wait until she's consistently down to one nap a day. I don't feel like I can make plans the way that things are now b/c she's all over the place!

  • N's are not set in stone but they generally fall around 10:30 and 3 or 3:30 each day.  He's usually good with about 3 - 3 1/2 hours of awake time between sleeps so it varies a little depending on when he woke up and how long he napped.  He yawns and rubs his eyes when he's tired.  Other than that you would think the kid never got tired!

  • We still just go by her cues. Usually it is still 2 naps a day, around 10am and then again around 2-230ish. She doesnt sleep longer than 1 1/2 hours either time. Somedays like today she will nap early she was up at 8 am and then back down for a nap at 945am until almost 1130.

We aren't ones to change our schedule based on when she will or will not be napping. She can fall asleep anywhere.

  • We also do a rough 2-3-4 schedule, so it depends on when she gets up and how long naps are, but usually they are around 9:30 and 2:30.
  • I think her schedule kind of evolved from her cues. She usually takes a morning nap around 10-11:30/12 and an afternoon nap from 3:30-5. However she usually let's us know when she's sleepy. It's generally around these times but if she's crashing earlier then we put her down earlier. If we stick to these times she's a very happy baby!

  • We go by cues but it normally works out to be around the same time everyday...depending on wake-up times.

We are usually two naps a day, and we just go by her cues instead of such and such of a time. She has put herself on a very nice, consistent, schedule all on her own so there is no point in messing with it for the sake of having her down by a certain exact time.
