Birth Preferences for J and C

Our goal is to have a natural childbirth, free of medications and interventions.  We have chosen HypnoBirthing to help us prepare for this desired birth experience.  We understand that in the event of a medical necessity, where the health of the baby and/or mother is compromised, we will respect the judgment of our care provider.

?      We prefer to have a natural labor, without artificial induction or influence.

?      We are aware that we have the option of medications if needed.  However, we appreciate you not offering them.  Please know that if medications are desired, we will ask for them.

?      We prefer staff/nurses who support our natural childbirth goals.

?      We would like access to a Jacuzzi tub, Birth Ball, Squat Bar, and Mirror.

?      We have received permission from our doctor for a Heplock instead of an IV.

?      We would like to stay mobile throughout labor, with intermittent monitoring.

?      We would prefer to not be asked pain management questions.

?      We request the freedom to labor and birth however feels most comfortable.

?      We would appreciate not being told when and how to push, but would rather birth instinctively.

?      We prefer to risk a tear rather than have an episiotomy

?      We would like immediate skin-to-skin contact with our baby after he is born.

?      We will delay cord clamping and cutting for at least 3 minutes, until the cord has ceased to pulse.

?      We request postponing newborn procedures for 2 hours, and that C be able to bathe him for the first time.

We appreciate you helping us have the birth experience that we desire for our baby and ourselves.

Re: Birth Plan

  • Fantastic!  Short and to the point!  Have you considered doing a separate page in the rare chance a c-section is needed?  I think I'm going to do this next time.

  • No, I hadn't thought about that.  What would I need to include?

I haven't really started thinking about it myself except that I know I would want a double suture.  Here is a website I came across with some good things to consider:

  • Have you had your hospital tour yet? You might find that some of the things you are asking for are standard procedure for your hospital (ie. access to a tub, birthing ball, heplock vs. IV) and then you could eliminate those points. Also, your first bullet point is a little redundant with the opening paragraph - you could probably leave that off. Other than that, I think it looks good!

  • I would list at the top also if you have gestational diabetes, RH, and all those other tests if you tested positive for any. I have a blood clotting disorder I made sure to list at the top.

Although they have this information, it's always better to remind them especially in case it's not your doctor who delivers, like we're just going to have whoever's on call so 50/50 chance it may be the other doctor in the practice.

We haven't taken a tour yet, but I do know there are tubs in only half the rooms.  Not sure about the other stuff but I'll check.  Thanks for all the input!

That's a good point.  So far I don't have any "issues" to include but I take the GD test in about 2 weeks.  Thanks!

That seems perfectly reasonable and well done.
