What did you wear in the hospital after giving birth?

This is a repost from the June board. Figured I would ask all recent Momma's! And Congrats to all of you! :-)

I am struggling with what clothes to pack for my hospital bag, and trying to picture what I'll be wearing while in recovery.

I know you will wear the hospital gown for a while after birth, then likely take a shower, then maybe put some comfortable PJs on? But did you just change from one pair of PJs to the next the whole time you are there...until its time to go home, then you put on normal clothes again?

Any help is appreciated :-)

Re: What did you wear in the hospital after giving birth?

  • I wore the most comfortable clothes I had that weren't super nice. I had an old pair of yoga pants and some comfy maternity t's. Don't wear anything new; you'll likely get blood on it at some point. And, don't wear anything tight. The constant trips to the bathroom to change your bloody pad/ice pack get old.

  • I wore my yoga pants. That way I was comfy and I felt like I could go out in public and look halfway decent. :)

  • I wore sleeping nursing bras during delivery and recovery.  Loved that thing.  I only put on my own pj's the last night. The first few days things are a little messy and personally rather be wearing something that I don't care about.

  • I wore my gown until the morning we were going home.  Then I wore black yoga pants, a nursing tank, and a hoodie.  I had packed other pajamas & stuff, and totally didn't need or want them.  I didn't get blood on anything either (hospital gown, or otherwise).  Next time I have a baby, I'm packing WAY less stuff.  I will probably go home in what I wear to the hospital.

  • I wore black yoga pants with a nursing tank and hoodie while I was in the hospital.  I was showered and changed within a couple hours after delivery.  It felt great to be in my own clothes and pants weren't a problem at all when the nurses came in to check me.  It was also much easier nursing in my tank than messing with the hospital gown slits and I didn't have to worry about accidentally flashing anyone when I wasn't nursing.

I checked out the day after I delivered, so I only brought one of each as well as a set of regular clothes to go home in.  I prefer to pack light and we were only 10 minutes from home.  It wouldn't hurt to have extras though if you don't mind packing them, especially if the hospital is far from your house.

  • I wore the hospital gown/robe for about 48 hours. Then yoga pants and a comfy shirt. I also had a couple of sports bras/nursing bras. I'm glad I had more than 1 of those because I leaked more than I did the first time around.

  • I put on black yoga pants as soon as I was allowed (half hour after giving birth) and then wore a nursing tank or shirt.

I didn't get blood on anything but the black pants might've helped!

  • sweat pants and a nursing tank, and a hoodie when i walked in the halls.

I know you will wear the hospital gown for a while after birth, then likely take a shower, then maybe put some comfortable PJs on? Yes. I had an unplanned c-section, so it was a good day before I had that first shower. I think I wore a clean gown for a second day and then switched to PJs for the final 2 days. With a c-section, they want to check your incision and pp bleeding once in a while. Not sure exactly, but I think with a vaginal they will want to check any tears/cuts and pp bleeding, so the gown will probably be easiest for the first day. But did you just change from one pair of PJs to the next the whole time you are there...until its time to go home, then you put on normal clothes again? Yes, I brought 2-3 pairs of pajama pants and 2 nursing tanks. I wish that I had more nursing tanks but I didn't expect to be in for 4 days. With a c-section, you often end up pumped full of fluids and air and you will be huge all over for a few days pp. Bring comfortable clothes either way.

  • I wore "cheerleading" shorts as all the nurses kept saying.  Just cotton Soffee shorts and a tshirt.  I wore the Target kimono style cotton dress the last day.
  • I wore the hospital gown for most of the time. I had a nursing nighty-type dress from Motherhood that was pink with white polka dots. It was super comfy, nursing-friendly, and made me feel human again. Definitely bring socks. For the ride home, I wore a comfy t-shirt and black yoga pants.

This. The only item I used that I packed was my robe and sleep nurse bra.  I had a whole duffle bag full of useless items.  Between nursing all the time, going to the bathroom every 2 hours, and the nurses checking me all the time it was way easier to stay in the hospital gowns.  Not to mention I was a bloody mess and had little energy so getting up out of bed was a chore, nevermind changing clothes.  I just asked for clean gowns when I need them and that was it!

  • I brought my own gown (a walmart one I didn't mind throwing away if anything happened to it), a robe and a pair of PJs. My baby was in the NICU, so I was thankful for the robe and PJs so I didn't seem exposed while I went to see him. I brought socks and flip flops. That, toiletries, and a going home dress was all I needed.

  • Just another thought, my feet were ridiculously swelled up so wear spacious shoes or slippers. I actually needed to wear the slippers home.

I wore my pretty pushers gown for a day. It was fantastic for breast feeding. I could pull it down easily and the nurses could get to my stomach and everything very easily. Plus, it was super comfy and looked great in pictures. Other than that I just wore two cute night gowns from Target. I wanted to be comfortable and with the large amount of bleeding and the discomfort from the stitches pants just were not an option.

  • I was worried about giant pad show-through with yoga pants, so I took cute sweats from VS and some cute loose lounge tops... I wore those during the day and pjs at night.

I delivered at 10:34 pm and wasn't in my actual hospital room until after 1am, so I stayed in the gown the first night until I could shower in the morning... But I hated it. So I was glad to have something else. :) I didn't get blood on any of my own clothes, but I did have black and dark gray sweats, just in case :)

  • I wore the hospital gown and a nursing nightgown I brought.  I had a c-section though so I didn't want any pants rubbing on my incision.  I also wore home what I went to the hospital in.  I didn't find a need to bring myself going home clothes.  I had a planned c/s though so I only wore the clothes I came in for like 2 hrs before taking them off.

  • I asked this on the bump and everyone said to wear comfy yoga pants, so I did. What I didn't know was that I would end up with a section. I would have perferred to wear a cotton dress (loose). My pants hit right wear my incision was and it wasnt bad but it was annoying.

I wore a gown (1 gown the whole time) in the hospital and I wish I had taken a dress to wear. So I guess my suggestion is pack several comfy thing in the car so that you can grab whatever.

And PS I LOVED the mesh hospital panties and even stole 2 packs to take home! I think you either love them or hate them :)

  • wore my yoga pants and a robe over my gown to walk around before I got the epidual, and wore the gown after. it was plenty comfy and I didn't have to worry about anything. I didn't care. it's a hospital.

  • I wore this in black, I had 2. I loved it. Nice enough for visitors but easy access for exams, breastfeeding, etc and easy to get on and off, go to the bathroom, etc. I wore them on and off for the next few weeks at home.

  • I kept peeing(uncontrollable peeing) and leaking blood off the pad so I just wore the mesh undies the hospital provided and the hospital gown until the morning we left. I didn't want to ruin my clothes. I changed into yoga pants and a nursing tank before we left.

This for me too. I didn't want my clothes getting blood all over them.

  • I wore a nursing nightgown, and switched each morning (so I wore 2)... I also wore a cami under them during the day (lesson learned from DS1 my boobs were hanging out in all the pictures...)

I wore a sun dress home although it was freezing because that was what I was admitted in when it was 90 degrees out

  • I wore a tee shirt and yoga pants and the day I left I changed into a sundress. Also, everyone says you'll bleed on your clothes, but I never did, and even if you do get a little blood on something, you can just wash it.

  • DS was born at 8:20 in the evening, so as soon as the epi wore off the nurses helped me shower and into a gown.  I slept in that the first night.  The next morning I got up and showered and put on a comfortable pair of maternity pjs I had since I knew visitors would be in and out all day, and the second day I had some comfortable black yoga type pants and a t-shirt that I wore home.

I wore the gown the whole time, I was so sore putting on clothes was the last thing on my mind, plus I would have bled all over whatever I had brought.

  • I wasn't planning on wearing my own clothes. Why ruin something you're only going to wear for a day? But I ended up have a c/s and after two days when they took out the cath I had DH bring me some PJ's that buttoned down the front. At that point, they were the most comfortable clothes I'd ever put on. After a hospital gown, anything that covers your backside and doesn't come untied every five minutes is going to feel great.

  • I wore black yoga pants (in case blood leaked) and one of my husbands t-shirts. Nothing fancy just something comfortable.
  • I went to Target and bought a non-maternity but stretchy cotton nightgown and a robe. They were comfy and cheap so if they got stained (they didn't) I wouldn't care. The neckline on the nightgown was stretchy so I could easily pull it down to BF. plus, it looked cute for pictures! ;)

  • I packed yoga pants, nursing tanks and also button down pjs, but never wore them. I had a c-section and didn't want anything on my stomach over my incision, so I just stayed in my hospital gown and if I got up and walked anywhere, I wore my robe.
  • Nice pajama pants, nursing tanks and button up pajama tops (open of course)

The hospital I was at had special nursing gowns, so I just stayed in hospital attire until I went home. I wore my loosest fitting yoga pants and a nursing top.
