Milk before bed?

There has been a lot of discussion about this recently.  My pedi did not give me advice on this so I am asking you ladies.

What is the time span btwn the last sippy/bottle of milk and the time LO goes down for bed?  What has your pedi advised?

Re: Milk before bed?

  • My little one hasn't had his 1 yr check up yet...but lately he's moving away from drinking a bottle right before bed. He's just becoming less interested. So I've been trying to get him to drink some of his last daily bottle at dinner in a sippy and then whatever else I can get him to drink in a bottle before we head to bed.

I think pedi's want baby to not have a bottle at bed time because it's bad for their teeth? I've heard so many different things. But it did seem like a crutch getting my little guy to bed for a while there...I'm glad he's becoming less interested in it at that time.

Joey has never had milk immediately before bed, so I am probably no help.  He was drinking a bottle at 6, then dinner, bath and bed.  My pedi advised us to start changing over to either dinner first and then a bottle or offering a sippy of milk along with his dinner (we are trying the 2nd option) so that he starts getting more of his calories from solids rather than milk.
  • We have never done milk before bed either. DD usually gets her last sippy before her bath at night. This was the same routine when she was using bottles (we've always done eat/play/sleep). We'll be seeing the pedi on Friday but I'm not expecting to be told to change the routine.

  • H eats dinner, plays, has bath, gets ready for bedtime and gets a bottle directly before bed. I don't plan on stopping this. She anticipates it and it is part of our routine.

  • He was being nursed before bed, but it was quick -- maybe five minutes.  He's self-weaned completely in the last week or so.  I can't get him to nurse at all before bed, so his last milk is his straw cup at dinner.  No change in how he goes down (awake and happy, puts himself to sleep within 10mins or so) or how long he sleeps for (generally around 11-11.5hrs).

  • She nurses right before bed.

    I didn't discuss it w/the dr.

  • My pedi didn't say anything about it but A has her last cup of milk at dinner at around 6:30.  Bedtime is usually 7:30-8.  She occasionally has water before bed but milk is for meal time.

  • Our pedi recommended we cut the bedtime bottle (and bottles all around), so she's getting her sippy at dinner and then we do a small snack with sippy before bed. The snack/sippy has replaced the bottle. We now do a bath, snack, book, cuddles, brush teeth, bed.  She's done great with it so far.  GL.

  • I keep hearing mixed things.  I hear not to serve WCM because of iron absorbtion issues and then I hear not to serve WCM before bed because of tooth decay.  DS eats dinner between 6:00 and 6:45 and gets a bath and jammies after that.  We have been doing water in sippies at meal time and then a bottle of WCM before bed.  We are trying to break that habit, but he loves his bottle of milk before bed!  I already feel guilty taking away nursing before bed.

  • LO finishes whatever is left from his dinner sippy. We do this after jammies, in the living room. We read a book there, brush his teeth and then he heads to bed. So maybe 15-30 mins, depending how long it takes him to fall asleep.

  • I still nurse before bedtime. It helps DD relax and wind down.

Ditto, I work all day long, so this is sort of our time to chill together.
