Braxton Hicks at 20 weeks?

Hi, I don't remember having braxton hicks at all with my first so this is a new experience. Is it normal to have this so early?

?Thanks!?

  • yep it's normal.  I was surprised too.  I didn't have any first time around either and this time they're kicking my a$$.

  • I think I read somewhere that you actually start getting bh at 6 weeks but just don't feel them until you are larger or sometimes you never feel them. Where this is your second child you are probably just feeling them sooner because your uterus muscles are a little looser already. I think I felt them around 22 weeks for the first time.
  • That makes me feel better. I tried calling my drs. office, but they are closed today. The Mayo Clinic book that I have mentioned them about 21-22 weeks. Thanks ladies.
  • I am glad you asked this... I was wondering the same thing.  I "think" I had one this morning and another one a couple days ago.  Both times it has happened while laying in bed and I roll over or something, suddenly my entire little baby belly (my ute) will get really hard feeling and uncomfortable.  It's not painful at all, just uncomfortably tight.  It only lasts for about a minute or so.   I am assuming these are BHs?

  • It was normal for me with DS.  Not so with this pregnancy yet though.  Mine with DS were so frequent that I was put on bedrest at 24 wks. for the duration and had to take Procardia and have a couple of terbutaline shots.

Yup, that's what mine feel like. I find that they sometimes happen is I do something "strenuous" like try to get out of the bed using mostly my ab muscles.?

  • Mine started around 20 weeks or so.

  • Mine started at about 20 weeks. My Dr said that as long as I wasn't having more than 6 per hour not to worry. Make sure you are drinking enough water as dehydration can cause them too.
  • I felt them around 20 weeks and this is my first! I guess you feel them earlier with subsequent pregnancies!
