Asher- nickname issues???

Currently expecting a boy, and my husband and I really like the name Asher.  Not a name we have ever heard of around our area, even though I know it is biblical and it seems fairly popular on here and on the SSA lists.  We had our list narrowed down to two choices, with Asher being one of them.  But, a lot of our close friends and family that we have shared our ideas with either say..."I really like/love that" OR "Think of the nicknames, they are going to tease him/call him this..."!

So I guess my question is...Do you know anyone named Asher or know of anyone who has named their child Asher?  What do you think of the name?  Have you ever heard of anyone calling someone with the name Asher any crazy/awful nicknames?

I always disliked my name for it being so different when I was younger (Alana- lots of mispronouncing and a few stupid nicknames), and I'm not sure I want to put my child through that.  Is it really this different?  Are we setting him up to be teased?  I don't think he would have issues with mispronunciation, but I nicknames I am not so sure about.

Please lay your honest opinions out there :-)  Thanks!

Re: Asher- nickname issues???

  • I'm not sure how someone could make fun of the name Asher. The only nickname I can think of for Asher is Ash, and I don't think it's bad at all. Asher is a good choice! You're overthinking it.

  • I think Asher is an adorable name, and I've only met one Asher my entire life and he was in my 3rd grade class, then he moved and I haven't met one since! So it's definitely getting the 'not-insanely-over-popular-like-all-the-names-i-see-now' vote :)

But, he's indefinitely going to be called Ash as a nickname. Now if you don't know girls named Ashley, then that seems okay. But I personally know a few, and most of them go by Ash, so I've always thought of it as girly. Tongue Tied So basically, the name is adorable, but the nickname Ash might be not as adorable.

Don't you hate when that happens? Seriously I've decided on Rosalynn, but I really hate the nickname Rosie. Guess I'm just gonna deal with it though. So it's totally up to you :)

  • My DD had an Asher in her class at daycare. His family called him Ash and Ashie, but he was just a toddler, so the Ashie nn seemed fine. I think "Ash" works best for an older boy/adult.

Some of the people we have shared with that have disliked have said nicknames like "Asser" or "Ash-hole" lol...things like this.  We kind of thought this seemed a little silly...but if they thought of it will others too? I think I am just freaking out, haha!

  • I work with an Asher and he's the first person with that name I've met.  We couldn't think of a nn at work and he said he never had one so he just stayed Asher.  One of the really little girls in the library called him ash tray, but I think that was just her being silly.

  • Eh. Asher's a great name and if it worked with our last name, it would've been a top contender. Kids will find a way to make fun of anything.

  • I think it's a nice name. My niece is named Asher (yes I know, a girl) and I don't think she has any nicknames. None related to her name at least. There was a little boy in one of DD1's playgroups with this name and his mom just called him Asher.
  • I could see Ass... maybe. At least for my generation, it is a unique name so older people may miss pronounce or miss spell. IMO.

  • Well the way I see it is kids are going to make fun of ANY name trust me they'll find a way. My cousins name is Matt and kids would say "hey door matt!" when we were growing up. My other cousin is Justin and they would call him "just in time" or "just in case" I mean really? Anyway my point is no matter how simple or harmless the name seems they will find a way those crafty little children...

  • I know one Asher, he goes by "Ash"
  • I had an Asher in my class last year. Everyone called him Asher. No nick names or teasing.  If fifth graders can handle it I think you'll be fine.

  • I think you're overthinking it. Asher is a fine name. He doesn't have to have a nickname if he doesn't want one. My brother is Nathan...not Nate, and no one ever calls him Nate, because that's not what he goes by. Asher will probably be Asher unless he wants to be called Ash or something else.

If you're worried about people substituting "ass" instead of "ash," I think you can relax. You can make fun of any name (kids are creative that way), but if it happens, it will only be funner for a few days and then everyone will move on. Wink Teach him to be confident and not let something so silly get to him and bullies won't find him a very fun target.

My husband's name is Justin, and my dad calls him "Just In Time" lol.  It's lovely.  I guess everyone gets made fun of at some point.  A neighbor boy told me yesterday that one of his classmates is named "Cayenne" (like cayenne pepper)...so this makes me feel a little bit better about our different name choice, hahaha!

  • Asher was one of the contenders for my sons name, I honestly can't think of any negative nicknames, we were just going to call him Ash which I don't think is horrible. People will have horrible things to say no matter what name you pick!

  • When I hear Ashie I think of Ashie Larry from that epsiode of Chappelle show... could be an obscure reference, I know. Otherwise I like it just as Asher.

  • One of my best friends has a son named Ash (18mos) - it's not short for anything, but his grandparents (my friend's ILs) wanted them to use the name Asher and then just nn him Ash.  It's a really cute name and seems to work well for them!

  • Our son is Asher. Every now and then someone calls him Ash, but we don't so it's not common. Also rarely we might hear a rhyme...Asher the basher, but like I said, very rare. We love the name and the meaning is awesome. Go with it!
