Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Standing and sitting in crib before bed...

We have previously done CIO and DS has been going down fine awake for months, and this past week, he has started standing and sitting in the crib before he goes to sleep. Sometimes it results in crying, other times it does not. I have been periodically going in and laying him back down, and he eventually just goes to sleep, I have even tried a later bedtime. Some nights he is sleepy and goes down fine, but others like tonight, he was super sleepy drinking his bottle and rocking, and his eyes were barely open when I put him down, and now he is just sitting there. Would you lay him down? He knows how to lay down himself, but last time I left him it ended in him being overtired and a lot of crying. Anyone gone through this? Hoping it's a quick stage! Thoughts on how you dealt with it? He is otherwise a pretty good sleeper... not perfect, not generally pretty good. TIA!

Re: Standing and sitting in crib before bed...

  • We used the CIO method on our DS and it worked wonders.  Now that DS is 9months and is cruising around he will consistantly stand or sit up when we lay him down for bed.  I always allow him to sit up once - then I lay him down right away, say good night and walk out of the room even if he is standing or sitting again.  It takes him about 15 minutes to finally lay down and put himself to sleep.  Hope this helps!

Thanks, so I am thinking it's a developmental thing, and hopefully the novelty will wear off? Luckily he didn't cry tonight, but did take about 30 mins. Tomorrow will put him down a bit later and see if that helps any, but if it takes 15 mins with no tears I will take it. Thanks!

  • My LO is older than your baby (17 months), but sometimes he just rolls around his crib (standing, sitting, rolling) for up to 45 minutes.  If he isn't crying and he normally isn't - we just leave him alone.  We have one of those monitors where we can watch him and we can see that he is not unhappy at all.  He is just settling down.  Normally he just goes right down.  I hope your LO figures it all out real soon.

My experience mirrors this (except we did not do CIO).  DS also sits up in morning now when he's awake.  I have no clue what he does in his crib but at night he figures it out, haha.  Good luck!

This.  Except I don't bother with laying him down more than the initial time when I put him in the crib.  Most of the time he plays for anywhere from 15-45 minutes and then goes to sleep.  Sometimes he cries.  But never more than 5 minutes.

I also just lay her in the crib once, wave goodbye and say goodnight, I love you, and walk out the door.  She did the stand/sit/cry thing for awhile, but if I went back in it only dragged that out longer.  Its still tough at naptime when she may cry for 5 minutes first, but at bedtime we don't get a peep out of her anymore.  I also keep a small lovey and 2 small stuffed animals in her crib to play with, or give her comfort, if she needs it.
