Food Allergy

Food allergy through breast milk with no Gi issues?

Ds has been on elecare for over a month and his eczema has not improved so I have decided to go back to giving him breast milk. He has tested positive to egg , peanut and more mildly to dairy recently on the skin prick test. When he was breastfeeding before he never had any gastro issues like blood in stools , gas, fussiness etc. he just had eczema. I'm at the point where I'm wondering if his eczema even flared up from what I ate at all since he doesn't have those foods in his system via the formula yet his eczema has not improved in any way. Is it normal for babies who have food allergies and are exposed to them to NOT have some kind of GI response?  FYI I was on the elimination diet before and so no real improvement. I'm going to go back on the diet again this time too

Re: Food allergy through breast milk with no Gi issues?

  • Not sure I'm any helpful...but here it goes:DD has had acid reflux since week 1 of her life. She's been on medication since.

At 4 month, we had an allergy test done because of her eczema and hive. She's never had any blood in her diaper. She's had a few mucusy poops here and there.

According to the skin prick test, she's allergic to eggs, not allergic to dairy.

According to the rast test she's allergic to eggs, nuts, soy and dairy (this was class I, she had milk protein poop allergy test done twice with negative results).

I've been on a diet free of egg, nuts, soy, dairy and gluten for 3 weeks and her reflux is the same as before the diet, which makes me think, it's not diet related.

DS tested positive for nut, peanut, dairy and sesame allergies, but I never cut any of those from my diet.  He's never had GI issues, but he's had eczema since birth.  It's clearing up now that he's older, but I didn't see a drastic improvement when I stopped BFing a couple months ago.  His pedi said some babies don't react to allergens in breastmilk, since the proteins are denatured.

This!  DS1 tested allergic (severely) to dairy at 9 months and i had never cut it from my diet.  He had eczema that went away when we supplemented (and eventually switched full time to) soy formula.

DS2 has horrible eczema and I'm assuming he's allergic to dairy too.  I'm not cutting it out 100% but I'm watching it.  OUr allergist suggested I not alter my diet too much b/c no exposure can be just as bad as over exposure in the long run.  He's not bothered by teh eczema and the creams/lotions we have keep it under control really well.

Neither of my boys have had GI issues.

    * DS1...allergic to dairy, peanuts, eggs and turkey *
