advice on starting rice cereal?

The doc told me I could start my 19week old on some rice cereal.  This is my first baby so I'm a little nervous and unsure what to expect.  Any advice is welcome!!  Did you make your own??  If not, what brand did you buy??

I bought beechnut bc it's soy and dairy free and my daughter is allergic. I only made one tablespoon of cereal added to 1 oz of warmed formula, so it was just a bit thicker than formula. She spit a ton out but she swallowed a lot too. Also, try when they are hungry but not ravenous or they will just get frustrated. Good luck!

  • I bought the organic brown rice cereal...it looked a bit more naturally nutricious than the regular variety.  I mix it with breastmilk, to a thick consistency.  My son will spit it out if it's too soupy.  The 4 month visit seems to be when you get the green light to introduce cereal...but by all means feel free to wait if your baby is not giving you cues that he/she is ready.
  • I just bought the Gerber cereal. I mix it with my BM till its like a soupyish potato. A doesnt really care for it and hates it even more if its more chunky.

I bought the Gerber brand and ds loved it. The first time I gave it to him he didn't miss a drop, he was like a little vacuum cleaner lol. I mixed in breast milk at first but now usually just use water (thicker consistency seems better). After a couple weeks I started mixing in fruit. First was pears then bananas. Only problem is that it makes him constipated. I just switched to oatmeal which he also loves. I mixed in some prunes with apples so I'm hoping that will get things moving better. Be careful once you start adding fruits though. One fruit at a time and give it about a full week before switching to the next one.
