Babies: 9 - 12 Months

dentist

Just curious when you're planning on taking your LO's to the dentist? Our DS has four teeth now, two on top and two on bottom, we brush regularly just curious when I should take him for his first check up

Re: dentist

  • I took my older DD when she was two, and will probably do the same for my LO.

  • I'm guessing sometime between 1 and 2.  My dad's a dentist and won't give me a straight answer :(

  • We see a pediatric dentist so DD went for her first visit at 9 months and DS will go at a year.  He recommends them coming in within six months of the first tooth coming through or age 1 as per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.  DS is going a little late as we already had an appointment for DD and decided to do them at the same time.

  • I didn't add her to my dental plan this year, but I probably will for 2013. So I'll probably take her early next year.

  • My dental hygienist suggested 2 years old because it is too hard for them to sit still if they are any younger than that. My baby also has 4 teeth now and she suggested brushing her teeth already (using tap water or baby toothpaste that contains no flouride). She gave me a toothbrush for her. So I guess they are never to young to start cleaning their teeth even if you don't take them to the dentist.
  • A pediatric dentist that I know recommends bringing them in at 1 yo but our dentist said that it wasn't necessary until 3 yo.  We just made sure to brush our LOs teeth twice a day every day.  We also started flossing DS#1's teeth when he was abour 18 months old because they were so crowded.

  • Just asked my dentist this over the weekend.  She said once they get all their baby teeth - typically between 20 and 30 months.

  • Theoretically you don't have to take them until preschool. But my dentist offered free dental checks for infants under 1. O I took them. It's not a major checkup all he did was briefly look at their teeth and made sure there was no defects. He doesn't clean or do anything to them. It took about 20 seconds
