TTC After a Loss

progesterone to help sustain a pregnancy??

We have had 2 losses in the last year and my OB is wanting us to take progesterone suppositories vaginally once we get a positive result to help sustain the pregnancy. A friend of mine had to do this, but was able to start taking this around her ovulation date. I called my OB to ask her about this and she said no, we would just start it once we got a positive result. Do any of you ladies have experience with progesterone and when did you start taking it? Thanks in advance.

Unless you have LPD, there's not really much reason to take it after O. I know there are a lot of people on PgAL who were given supplements after their betas came back with lower than desired progesterone. You should be alright.

ETA: There's a lot of debate on whether or not progesterone supplements are worthwhile for non IVF/IUI treatments. It's normal for there to be a variation from doctor to doctor. If you don't trust the treatment you're getting from yours, you are well within your rights to seek a second opinion. Good luck! I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

This is pretty much dead on. My RE does a progesterone check at 7dpo and if its low I get supplements starting that day.

  • I am actually taking it right now.  When we were leaving after my cd12 monitoring my RE gave it to me and said to start it the morning after the IUI (which was friday)  I was actually surprised..she said it would help the egg implant, and couldn't hurt to take it. And mine are vaginal as well.  I do know that when I do get pg I will have to take the 17P injection from 12 weeks to 36 weeks to help prevent PTL again.  So far I have had no problems or side affects with it.

  • My progesterone was low last pregnancy and I was put on a suppository at 6 weeks. Next time, I will be starting progesterone when I get a bfp. As my dr said, there is no way to know whether my progesterone was low because the pregnancy was not viable or vice versa, but taking the extra progesterone won't hurt.

^This is excellent advice!  I was not Dx with a LPD, but my LPs were no longer than 9 days and spotting for half, so I was put on progesterone for my 2ww.  Friends who have had losses and then gotten BFPs later, started progesterone after their BFP.

This... but there is no reason you can't have your prog tested 7dpo... if it's low, you should be starting it before you get a BFP, not after

My RE is the same way.  I tested low for 4 cycles and my first pregnancy, so now I start progesterone supps. at 4dpo every cycle.  I will continue until week 10 of pregnancy.  I have an LPD that moderately corrected with Clomid and Ovidrel, but by 8dpo my progesterone level starts to bottom out.

    All IF/AL Welcome!
  • I took progesterone in oil (PIO) for my first IVF and my FET. For the IVF they had me stop around 10-12 weeks. Now since I have had a (basically) unexplained loss, they started the PIO prior to my FET transfer and were going to keep me on it for the duration of the pregnancy. I had low levels during IVF but it was assumed that the placenta would kick in so they stopped it. I started contracting at 18 weeks and delivered at 23w3d so idk if it was caused by low levels or not. For whatever reason the FDA approves progesterone for pregnancy but it is name branded p17. I think they usually give them 1 x week. My RE said the "normal" textbook level may be too low for me. Who knows. The shots aren't bad, I felt like I was getting my $$ worth.

My OB also said to take it after a BFP, however my MFM said after O. It's really different from doctor to doctor. Did she say why she said no?

  • I talked with her again a couple days later and she said she looked for research on it and couldn't find anything saying that taking it before BFP was beneficial. However, she did end up writing the Rx and said that it would be cheaper than checking levels. So I guess that works for me. Here's hoping.
