3rd Trimester

Well then wtf can I eat?!?!

I got the third fricken degree about what I eat today at my doctors appointment. I am having swelling, rapid weight gain, and my blood pressure was higher today than usual (Though NONE of this concerned them, even though I repeated asked them if there was something to be concerned about, they completely blew me off). She asked me what I had for lunch. I told her I had a sandwich, not thinking that was bad. She flipped out on me and asked "So basically you eat a lot of carbs"... last I checked two slices of whole wheat bread wasn't exactly A LOT of carbs. When I told her I do NOT eat unhealthy, that I eat whole wheats, I don't sit around eating ice cream and big macs, she looks at me and says "Well I don't know what you ACTUALLY eat, because I'm not there, but you need to watch your intake"... So my question. WTF can I eat? I have heard to watch my sodium, which I do. I do NOT cook with salt anyways, and when I go out I opt for plainer options like plain unseasoned rice, plain steamed broccoli etc. I went to open a bag of chicken, and my sister in law checked the sodium content. It isn't MY fault that everything in this country is preserved in salt, and it isn't MY fault that everything in this country is injected with chemicals and hormones!!!!!!! I had a SMALL chicken breast on wheat bread yesterday, and was told it was way to much sodium. So if I can't have a slice of whole wheat bread with a PLAIN chicken breast, wtf can I eat????

I'm beyond upset ><

  • How many weeks are you? It could be a medical issue if you are rapidly gaining without overdoing it. Have you been tested for pre-clampsia, gestational diabetes, etc.? Swelling and weight gain are normal with pregnancy, but if there is some rapid gain/swelling, they should've looked further into it than just giving you a hard time about your diet.

As far as things being preserved in salt, just don't buy anything that is already prepared. We only buy raw meats from the meat department, fresh vegetables from the produce section, and plain grains rather than boxed, frozen, or canned things. That keeps there from being any added sodium or preservatives. Same with drinks (water or water flavored with fruit).

  • It shows that I have gained 15 pounds in six days, there is NO way. I expressed my concern that the scale was off, and she rudely pointed out that "the scale isn't the one lying". Pardon me? And I have talked about my swelling repeatedly at the past couple appointments, and they say "watch your salt" every time. I DO watch my salt, but my question is what can I eat if I can't have  PLAIN piece of chicken, or fish for that matter because it has the same amount of sodium. If I can't have plain chicken then I am at a complete loss as to what I can eat that has less sodium but still has any sort of nutritional value. I've told her I am on WIC and I get fruits and vegis. I LOVE fruit and vegis. The thing is she just nods and rolls her eyes when I tell her I eat those things :( They act like I am some horrible person trying to OD my baby on salt or something. I don't even like salty foods.

  • I was bombarded about my diet too. If I saw a certain doctor, I basically had to tell her everything I ate for the whole week. I felt like a 5 year old and it was completely ridiculous. She kept acting like I was lying about what I was eating and telling me what I was really eating (because apparently she's psychic like that?).

I would stop telling people what you're eating. If you doctor asks again, tell her you're eating fine and leave it at that. Tell everyone else that your diet is none of their business.

I asked several times about the pre-clamsia and she didn't answer my question. Just continued looking at papers. I had the exact same concern that I may have developed a medical issue these past few weeks. I did test negative for gestational diabetes though, which was good. I agree, they should have looked into it.

I will look at the chicken in the meat market next time I get there. I always bought the low sodium version of things anyways, but again, the nurse obviously didn't believe that either, as was evident by her excessive eye rolling. Thank you for the suggestions, I will opt for some of the fresher options at the store, in my upset and hormonal freak out session I hadn't thought to go to the meat market, I've always bought the frozen chicken, and never had an issue with it before. Didn't realize it was such a huge deal, but apparently the nurse things so.

Wow, yeah that is exactly how they are with me at this practice with my diet. I left in tears. I nearly flipped out on my sister in law when she picked up the chicken to look at it's nutritional value.

One of the scales in my doctor's office was waaaay off last time I was there. They took me to the scale I weighed on the appt before and everything seemed to be in normal range. And then the nurse went about doing whatever it was she needed to do to have the bad scale re-aligned.

I asked about that, but like I said, she told me the scale wasnt the one lying... I think their scale is off. It's one of the manual ones, so idk. I heard those are more accurate, but I do NOT look like I have put on 15 lbs that fast, physically there is just no way. I'd buy 5 at the most due to swelling, but 15 is just ridiculous.

  • How many weeks are you?  I swell VERY easily.  I gained 7lbs in two weeks.  I go for acupuncture, do epsom salt baths, and go for walks or get massages - all help a LOT.

Salads with chicken that you cook (not sure what bagged chicken is . . . ), cranberries, and unsalted walnuts make a yummy salad or a wrap.

Chicken salad in a wrap that you make

Watermelon, peaches, bananas, apples, and other fruits are yummy.

I do an omlet for breakfast - onions to help with the swelling, peppers, two eggs and a little cheddar - so yummy!!!

Frozen chicken (breaded or not) is going to be high in sodium as a preservative. Time to pay closer attention to the packaging.

  • Oh i think i would file a complaint if you feel you have been treated badly....but maybe just add more veggies and fruit to your meals and drink lots of water...or just have some ice cream then at least the weight gain can be blamed on that lol.  Try not to stress about it too much but remember you know your body and if you feel something is off go in and insist on further testing! Oh and I agree with the ladies statement about just telling them you eat just fine and not go into detail I wonder if they do that with all the expecting moms there?  Most important try not to stress....

  • Like PPs mentioned, frozen or prepared foods will have higher sodium than fresh. You could try buying fresh chicken breasts and barbecuing a couple at a time and keeping them in the fridge for lunches (to cut up and add to a salad or wrap or whatever). Or cut up fresh veggies and fruits when you buy them to make preparing your own meals easier.

When I was working, I would cut up celery, carrots, fruit and romaine lettuce on Sundays and keep them in plastic containers in the fridge so it was easy to make a salad for lunch or with dinner and I'd have a healthy veggie snack to grab for.

Might be worth a shot to eat all fresh for a week and see if it makes a difference on the scale at next appointment? If sodium is the issue, you'll probably drop a few pounds by your next appointment by eating all fresh.

I second the bolded. Go for fresh produce and raw, unprepared meats. Even the lower-sodium packaged meats still have a lot. We only shop the parameter of the grocery store, unless we need spices or something, and we aren't sandwich eaters, so we cruise right on by the deli, too.

  • Glad I could make you smile...sometimes thats all we need to make things better!!!  I have been told I'm good at it, I like to think is my specail talent:)

  • is it too late for you to get a new doctor?  you have complained many times about issues with this doctor's office not supporting your desire to go natural and your weight and all of that.

If you know you're eating right, then I say don't worry. The weight has a way of just piling on, it just does- especially in the final weeks.

Don't be upset. You know you're eating right and that's what matters. Wish I could say the same!!

  • i know how you feel, i got the third degree about what i eat, from my nutritionist. first off i dont have alot of money, two i eat whats available, and three i work a rapidly changing schedule, my cooking time consistes of fifteen minutes and fourty to swallow it. which means i eat canned goods. they cant ban me from eating. little one is growing just fine and is right on schedule. so if they have a problem they can go to the damn store and shop for me.

  • Look into the Paleo diet. I did it for 2 months and felt amazing.
  • just saying, not that your doc was right but whole wheat is still a carb, basically anything NOT meat/cheese is a carb including fruit. However, fruits are more easily digested than breads since our bodies were not built to break down processed food, ie grains.

OMG I wanted to tell them this exact same thing! I went to the store, and a small bag of grapes cost me 5 dollars. A bag of carrots was four something. I payed 2 dollars and change for a head of broccoli... I eat as healthy as I possibly can with the budget I have. Really in all honesty, it is no wonder so many of us gain weight pregnant or not, considering that it's cheaper to buy canned, bagged, and preserved anything. It's sad that we live in a world where it costs less to buy 5 double cheeseburgers than it does to buy a big bag of grapes.

This.  You really need to avoid pre-cooked, packaged meats, canned foods & frozen meals. Even frozen veggies that have sauce have a ton of sodium.  Stick to raw, fresh meats, poultry and fresh produce.  There are foods that are low in sodium, you just have to cook them yourself.

It might not hurt to add fresh lemon juice (from lemons - not a plastic lemon) to your water and make sure you are drinking enough (water).

Do you weigh yourself at home?

  • I don't know what your activity level is, but I was on bed rest for 11 weeks and I had a lot of swelling and I had rapid weight gain at a few of my appointments. Now that I've been off, I've barely had any swelling.

Also, store bought bread - even whole wheat - can actually be pretty unhealthy and full of sodium because of how processed everything is. It might be worth it to invest in a bread machine. I use the rapid rise function and it literally take me about 4 minutes to put all the ingredients in and then I hit start and an hour later I have a loaf of fresh baked bread that I know all of the ingredients and exactly how much went in! - I have found that it also saves us a ton of money because I was buying the really expensive bread because I thought it was healthier.

But you aren't eating plain chicken..you just said it had sodium...you have to buy raw chicken from the butcher aisle not the prepackaged stuff. That won't have any sodium in it. The previous poster already pointed this out as well. Normal chicken doesn't have any sodium in it. So that's the problem. Don't buy packaged food or prepared food, get raw stuff.
