My initial reaction was Nelly, but then I thought Nell. So I really think it could go either way. I anticipate it would get mispronounced often though whichever way you choose.
DH and I are afraid it will get mispronounced, so I thought I'd ask what you all think. We're thinking about it for a middle name. DH's grandmother's first name is Carnell but she goes by Nell and we want to give our daughter (if we have one) her name. But I don't like the way Nell looks, I like Nelle better. Anywho... we were just talking about it today and started wondering if others would get that it was supposed to be pronounced "Nell" or if actually looks like it should be pronounced "Nelly". Guess it really could go either way.

I thought the exact same thing!

As a middle name, I wouldn't worry about it. How many people are actually going to read her middle aloud?
Yeah, since it's a middle name, I guess we shouldn't worry too much. I always just feel bad for people who have uncommon names, always first names though, and people pronounce them incorrectly. We're not about to change our minds about our choice, I just wanted some opinoins. )
Nell... I think Nelly should have an i before the e if it's supposed to be pronounced that way

See...I know Elle is "L", however, there are a lot of people out there that would automatically call her Nelly. My first name is Lawrene, but people say Lorene, Lorraine, and worst of all --Lawrence. So...my opinion, the more simple of a name, the better!
Re: How would you pronounce "Nelle"?
Nell..definitely.. Nelly would either be spelled like that or Nellie

you don't pronounce Belle like belly.... but I have seen Halle prounced like Hailey, not Hail!
It all depends on prior experiences, or maybe regions....
and being a teacher, I never guess a kids name that I wouldn't know how to pronounce.
Mrs. greg... it being a middle name, I wouldn't worry too much.... how often does a middle name even get used?
I thought the exact same thing!

I say Nell, just like Elle wouldn't be "Ellie" and Noelle wouldn't be "Noellie"
There's my logic for ya!
Ooh! Ooh! Thought of another one...
FontaNELLE:) And it's baby related:)
OK, and another one. Belle, from Beauty and the Beast. I don't think she would have appreciated being called "Belly".
See, Nelle is the perfectly appropriate spelling!
