Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how much solid food to give?

We just started solids a week ago, and things are going very well.  I'm just wondering how much to give DS now that he knows what to do with the food.  Right now I'm just giving him a Tbsp of a fruit or vegetable at dinner time, and about the same amount of cereal before bedtime since we were having trouble with him waking up early b/c he was hungry.

He doesn't seem full when I stop, I just keep reading that at this age he should be getting most of his needs from breastmilk so I don't want to give to much...but then I see charts that say at 4-6 months should be eating (or building up to) 6-10 Tbsp. a day. How much do you give your LO's?  And how do you go about phasing out bottles as he eats more?

Re: how much solid food to give?

  • At this age, basically with the solids is having lo getting used to them and to see what they are allergic to.

That is why you should only offer one new food per 3-4 days. You are already giving fruits / vegs / cereal all in ONE week??? If he gets an allergic reation, how are you supposed to know what is giving it to him??

Breastmilk / Formula is the MAIN nutrient for the FIRST YEAR OF LIFE. That is the number one priority at this point.

Honestly, I don't know how much is rec to give to them but I went slow with my dd... We started with the cereal in the morning (you can do it at night to to help them sleep) We use a lot of breastmilk / formula in it to make it really runny.

Then I added a fruit / veg at lunch time....then at 9 months you can introduce the meats....and that is what she had for dinner.

  • We started with cereal 3 days, sweet potatoes 3 days, then avocado today...so it has been spread out the recommended amount.

  • Have you ever looked into Baby Led Weaning?  You may find that VERY interesting.  It's what we did with DD and will do again with DS.  You let them do the eating.  They pick it up, they choose what to eat of what you've offered and they choose when to stop just like they do with breastfeeding.

  • There are no really hard and fast rules. You kind of follow your childs lead. My goal was to ease into it like i did with my first. For a few weeks I did once a day, now I do once or twice a day (weekends when we are out and about, ends up being once-daycare does twice). I have done apples, pears, sweet potatoes, cereal. Prob move on to carrots tomorrow or something new.

She was eating half a jar at most for the first 2 weeks and now she downs a jar (the jars labeled 1st foods). Honestly- I have no clue how many tbsp that is :) can you tell this is my 2nd child?

My goal is for her to have as much formula as she was pre-food. She was about 30-32 ounces and still about the same. I offer it an hour or so after a bottle, or hour before one (depending on naps).

Not sure if that helps- but don't make it stressful- not supposed to be at this age (or ever IMO).
