s/o rice cereal - anyone else confused?

I plan on waiting to introduce solids until Zachary is closer to 6 months (early July I think will be the earliest Ill start), but Im already confused on how much, how often, etc.

Does anyone have a good resource that I can look at? Ive read a bunch of websites and think I have a game plan, but since Im a FTM Im extra nervous about this transition. Do any of the 2+ Moms have any advice?

  • If you start at 6 months you don't need to do rice cereal.. you can just move on to regular purees.

Just do on ingredient things... for example no apple/ pear unless you have introduces apple and pear by themselves already.  Wholesomebabyfood.com is a great resourse for not only making your own baby food... but feeding in general if you plan to buy your baby food.

Just start with a little and work your way up to more.  always offer milk first.

  • Im sure your pedi will give you a little paper at your 4 month appt (mine did) and if not you can ask and they should be able to give ya one. It has all the basics on it.

I agree with pp - starting at 6 months you dont have to do cereal you can just jump to regular purees. If you do want to start cereal then just start like one time a day (I do it at night after she nurses). I mix the cereal with BM so its almost like soupy mashed potatoes and just give her little spoons at a time. A doesnt really care for it but we still try it every night.

Ive started purees - I make my own - I do one food a week. So like the first time we did bananas for a week, then the next week we did sweet potatoes for the week (Again I did this at night after nursing her but you can do it whenever you want). My little lady really didnt care for either of these so we have tried other things since then.

The big thing is though to just do it one new ingredient a week. So since we tried sweet potatoes and bananas already we will sometimes offer these together on a night but never with a new item. Just in case she has an allergic reation we can pinpoint what item caused it.

  • Thanks so much for your help, ladies. I feel a lot more comfortable with the idea of introducing solids now. My pedi did give me a hand out, but I found it confusing and of course didnt ask questions at my appt and have since been driving myself batty reading various websites!

Your responses made everything a lot more clear, especially to remind myself that 'food under one is just for fun' :)

  • My pedi started us with 1 tsp for every 2 oz formula in bottle and then i slowly started spoon feeding to make it thicker
