Changing doctors at 37 weeks pregnant... is that out of the question?
I had an issue in the past where he wanted to induce me right at 40 weeks. I told him no, and it was no longer an issue. He doesn't want me to go past 41 weeks though, says he doesn't like his ladies to have to go all the way to 42. Which is fine, I am okay with that.
Well today was absolutely awful. First I am not given the option to turn down cervical checks, they told me it's part of his policy and he has to do it. So I've caved in and had them done, despite the cramping and discomfort. I actually cried when he told me he was going to do another exam.
Then apparently their scale says I've gained 15 pounds in two weeks. I KNOW I have not gained that much weight, no *** way in hell. And no other scale I've gotten on has put me at that much weight, just the one at their office, and she rounds up. I've noticed a 10 lb difference from their scale to every other scale I've used. When I told the nurse there was no way, she gave me the third degree about "What I eat". I told her usually for lunch I'll have a sandwich, to which she replied "So you eat a lot of carbs"... No, two pieces of whole wheat bread a day is not a LOT of carbs. The nurse basically grilled me on my eating habits.
THEN I told the nurse I was having swelling and "pitting" to which I was again grilled about my eating and water. And told to stop laying on my back and to stop reclining. I DON'T lay on my back, and in fact was complaining about having to do so and it giving me a headache DURING my appointment. I told them I drink 6 liters of water a day, lay on my left side, and I try to keep my feet up, they didn't believe me, just gave me a "mmhmm sure" look and nod. I wanted to cry. And again I was grilled on "watching my sodium" and told by the nurse "well I don't see what you eat so there's no way for me to know what you are actually eating" when I told her I don't eat a lot of high sodium foods.
THEN I told them I am getting sick, I get severe sinus infections every six months since I was a kid (I actually had one six months ago, I was so sick I could NOT breath, and he gave me antibiotic). Only thing that knocks it out is antibiotic. Because within two days of getting sick, I usually have ear infections and bronchitis in the works. He told me to go buy some claritin and REFUSED to give me medication for my infection, obviously not convinced I actually was sick... I have sinus pressure, can feel it draining, and it's in my ear already and it's only been since last night that I felt it coming on.
I'm upset Vent over.
Re: I HATE my doctor's office now ><
Sounds like you're upset just b/c you're not hearing what you want to hear...
If the doctor expresses concern, you should listen....
He didn't express concern. I DID. I told them there was no way I gained that much weight, and IF I did then there is something WRONG to gain that much in a week considering I am walking 30 minutes twice a day, and I don't just sit on my ass all day. They ignored my concern and instead grilled me about what I eat... seriously, two slices of wheat bread isn't that bad... I mean come on. I don't eat ice cream or McDonalds or anything like that.
Plus they completely blew off the fact that I am having major swelling, I can see the dent where I push my finger for a full minute later. All I was told was to lay on my left side, and they actually told me to STOP going for walks, after I was just told at my LAST appointment that I needed to walk more!
In addition, the FIRST time she took my blood pressure she said it was high and wanted to retake it. When she took it again, she still didn't look happy. When I asked she just told me she was going with the second one. Idk bells went off for me, weight gain, severe swelling, higher blood pressure than I normally have ... anyone else find that concerning? She just blew it off.
And then blowing me off about being sick, yeah sure I didn't hear what I wanted to hear in that regard. I wanted to hear more than "Just take zertec or claritin". I know I HATE taking medication while pregnant, but I'd rather take 5 days of antibiotic, than have a full blown infection and bronchitis while delivering. Apparently he doesn't see it that way.
I agree with finding a new practice. In the mean time maybe you should go to an urgent care or your primary doctor, if you have one, to get antibiotics.
I hope everything works out
I would go to urgent care about your infection and maybe talk to them about the swelling and sudden weight gain, get weighed on their scale, and take any info you receive back to your OB's office. You could also call your delivering hospital or even go into L&D and have them evaluate you there. At the very least, if they see that your BP is elevated and you are that swollen, they will keep you to evaluate you and send their findings to your OB's office for follow up. Then, when you do follow up, you can say that you had concerns at your last visit and that you did not feel you were being taken seriously. If they deny it or poo-poo you again, then switch to another practice.
Or, to save yourself the trouble, find another OB who works out of your delivering hospital and change now. Just call the new office and make an appointment.
But get some antibiotics first!
Called the minor urgent care clinic in my town, they said that without my obgyn's permission, they cannot prescribe me anything other than over the counter medications. I plan to call my doctor in the morning (I am certain I will be worse by that point anyways) and ask that they please please please call me in SOMETHING. I know I hate the idea of taking antibiotic, especially this close to the end, but really I think it'd be worse to have an infection while trying to give birth.
I am about to call labor and delivery at the hospital I was planning to deliver at, and ask them what their recommendation is. I am going to explain my concerns about the weight gain, swelling, and initial blood pressure reading. Going to ask them what they suggest as I do NOT feel comfortable or cared about at the practice I am currently going to. Hopefully they can point me in the right direction.
I changed doctors at 36 weeks after the doctor I had been seeing forever kept measuring me entirely to large and pushing induction.
I am much MUCH happier with my new doctor. He is technically my former doctors boss or something like that. And he's got a great sense of humor too.
I'll start by saying that if I were you, I'd change OBs too. No one deserves to spoken to or treated like that.
Also, w/ regards to the edema. I've had pitting edema since week 22. I don't have high BP, in fact it is always very low, so they've never worried about the swelling. My OB just keeps telling me some women swell up more than others due to their own vascular anatomy where the major vessels branch down into the legs getting pressed on by a big baby. One nurse said she's heard another OB in the practice say that swelling means I'm staying hydrated and he'd be proud of me. LOL I just suffered through the swelling until week 36 and then stopped working (teacher). Even though I still have bad edema, In the week since I stopped standing all day, I lost 5 lbs of swelling. My OB said about 15lbs of my weight gain is water. And although the scale says I have gained a lot, no one in my OBs office has said a single critical thing about it.
So I don't know what your BP is, but if it is low or normal I would advise you not to worry too much about the swelling. Just take it as an annoyance that will go away after your LO arrives.
