Boobies......

Okay, now that I have your attention ;) I have 2 quick questions:

This is my first pregnancy, and I (still) have not gotten a nursing bra. Should I get one this week, or wait another week?  I am 38 weeks...I also do not know what size to get because I am fairly certain once my milk "comes in" my boobies may get bigger? Any advice ? Best kind of bra to get? Where to go?

Also - I am torn between a Thermal (forehead) Thermometer and the Ear Thermometer. Which is best ? Can you use an "ear" type on newborns?

Thanks for reading .....Sorry for the silly newbie questions!

Re: Boobies......

  • I would get a cheap bra at first and get fitted after.  What I bought before she was born, even going up sizes, did not work once my milk came in.  You need a rectal thermometer.  When your child is a newborn until I belive it was three months of age I can't remember that is the temp the doc. will want.  Now that DD is older I have a thermal one.

  • 1. Don't buy a nursing bra until after your milk comes in. My boobs grew even more after my milk came in with DD1. If you want to get something to wear before then, I would get a nursing tank. They are super comfy for your hospital stay and first day or so home.

    2. No real advice for the thermometer. We just used the one the hospital sent us home with.

  • I have 2 nursing bra's that I bought throughout my pregnancy that don't fit now. My boobs just kept growing and growing and now all I wear are sports bras. They are stretchy enough that I figure I can just flop a boob out when needed. And after the milk comes in I might go in and see if I can find one that fits me. I hope it's easier for you to find bras that fit you because I think I am just a weird shape/size where almost nothing fits right. GL!

I actually have a thermometer that works as both a forehead scanner and an ear scanner, all you have to do is take the end cap off and goes from ear to forehead. I don't remember the brand off hand but I tried it on my husband (tee hee) and it seems to work pretty well both ways.

  • I got a couple of very cheap nursing bras at target. And a bra extender. I am wider, but my breasts have not grown much...

For the thermometer, our hospital recommends regular digital thermometer and taking the temperature at the armpits.

  • I definitely recommend nursing tanks instead of bras at first, until your milk comes in & your supply regulates itself it's very hard to tell what size your boobs will end up being. We have both types of thermometers & much prefer the temporal version.  Good luck!

  • I wouldn't get a real fitted one with a wire until your milk comes in. In the mean time you can go pick up those sports bra/nursing ones or just get by on some nursing tanks.

  • No idea on the bras, I actually ordered 8 in different sizes this morning, and am planning on taking back the ones that don't fit after my milk comes in.

As for the thermometer, we were told at birth class that the only accurate way to measure temp on a newborn is rectally since they have so much trouble regulating skin temp early on. We purchased a rectal thermometer at BRU for around $7, when she gets older we'll get something different.

  • I just got some cheap stretchy nursing bras from Target, that way if they don't fit I won't feel so bad about spending the $$, and plus I can always use them in the future for when I'm just around the house. I'd say don't spend too much money yet until you know what your cup size will end up being when you nurse.

Thermometer- in my newborn care class they said for newborns to just use a digital thermometer in the armpit, and to only take their temps rectally if your doc specifically tells you to. That's just what I've heard!

it depends on the doctor, you might want to check with your intended pediatrician... Our network of providers prefers that you take a normal thermometer and do an armpit reading, not a rectal one, even if it is less accurate. Too many parents doing it wrong I guess.

  • I heard not to buy nursing bras until at least 2 weeks after you've given birth, because your rib cage and breast size will be changing.  I bought one for comfort reasons several months ago and an extender.  Extenders are really cheap.  I bought one for under $2.00. I have some nursing tanks for the first few weeks.

My hospital class recommends using the armpit for temperature as well.  They said to only do a rectal temperature reading if a doctor requests it.  I guess it depends on the practitioner you have.
