STMs - What do you actually wear in the hospital?

I am talking about after you give birth. I am struggling with what clothes to pack, and trying to picture what I'll be wearing while in recovery.

I know you will wear the hospital gown for a while after birth, then likely take a shower, then maybe put some comfortable PJs on? But do you just change from one pair of PJs to the next the whole time you are there...until its time to go home, then you put on normal clothes again?

Any help is appreciated :-)

  • I didn't change into regular clothes until the day I was leaving (which was a nursing tank and exercise pants). I could care less about what I was wearing at the time.

  • I put a new gown on after my shower... I didn't want to bleed on my clothes... but I did bring a robe... that I didn't mind getting dirty... I didn't put on real clothes until I knew I was getting discharged... And that was just basketball shorts and a t-shirt... Why make a mess on my own clothes that I have to wash... Thats how I looked at it...
  • I bought two VERY cheap cotton nightgowns that buttoned down the front so I could breastfeed. I wore one during labor, changed into the other the next day after my shower and wore yoga pants and DH's T-shirt home. Don't bring anything you don't want to risk bleeding on.

This. I wore the hospital gown the 3 days I was there and then changed when I left. This time I am bringing yoga pants and a nursing tank also one pair of pjs. I want to have the option to get into my own clothes but because of all the bleeding I dont know if I will.

If you have a vaginal birth, you'll likely be icing the area for about 24 hours.  I wore hospital gowns during that time.  Then I wore black yoga pants or capris until I left.

  • I wore a hospital gown until I was able to shower and then had 2 nursing gowns and a robe that I wore until I was discharged.   They were black/dark grey, so if blood got on them, you couldn't tell.  and they were more comfy then a hospital gown.

  • I was in for 3 days for a c section. First day was hospital gown, then the next 2 days I wore nursing nightgowns and robes. Wore yoga pants and a tshirt home. I didn't have any issues bleeding on clothes while there - the ginormous pads the hospital provides covered that.

  • I wore a tank top style nursing nightgown and put a robe on when people came in.  I had major hot flashes from the hormones and felt super hot and yucky, so I could never have handled a whole set of pajamas.  Plus, the nurses like to check your perineal area if you've had a vaginal birth, and a nightgown is just easier for that.  I never bled on anything, either.

  • I just wear the hospital gown and hot mesh panties provided. No need to dirty my own laundry while I'm paying them to use theirs. I change to normal clothes for discharge. Usually yoga pants or maternity jeans and shir

This.  I can't imagine wearing pants while in the hospital.  It seems like it would be such a hassle with all the bleeding, and nurse/dr checks, and ice packs, etc.  I'm bringing one night gown with me just in case I'm feeling really uncomfortable in the hospital gown, but I really doubt I'll wear it.

  • With my first, I wore a hospital gown for the three days I was there (c-section), then I changed in to a pair of sweats and a t-shirt to go home.  This time around, I took a shower on the morning of day 2 (point of clarification, I did take showers the first time around too) and put on a pair of yoga pants and a nursing tank top and the nurses had no trouble checking my incision.  On the third day, I wore a pair of sweats, nursing tank, and hoodie sweatshirt home.  I do have to say, the bleeding with a planned c/s has been way less than with an unplanned one.

  • For both DS and DD I wore my own nursing nightgown with light housecoat during my whole stay, and changed into regular clothes only to go home.
