We haven't started yet.  We're waiting to get the all-clear at the 6 month well visit.  We are going to try to do 90% BLW and maybe 10% purees.  We plan on starting with avocado and trying a new food every few days.  Neither of us have a history of food allergies, so there is no reason for us to be overly cautious.

I started giving my daughter little bits of something we're already eating. She's tried carrots, broccoli, avocado, and banana so far. She did gag a bit on some banana yesterday, but it wasn't a big deal. She coughed and spit it out. We only do BLW. That's how my toddler learned to eat and she is a really great eater. We don't follow a schedule or anything. When I plan meals I try to take the baby into consideration - basically I make sure there is one thing at dinner that she could try.

  • We are going to start after her 6mo appt as well.  We will probably start with avocados or bananas.  I will send purees to the sitters houses most likely.

The gagging is scary but it is how they learn to push food around in their mouths, or so I have been told :)

We started yesterday and so far Alex had banana, carrot, broccoli, eggo waffles and zucchini. He stuffs it all in his mouth and takes a bite, but then he spits most of it out. It's fun to watch him discover all this food!

All of that just yesterday? Wow. You've got a power eater.

Yeah, that's just what we offered though. He didn't really eat much of it, but tried it all. :-) Banana and waffle for breakfast, then carrot, broccoli and zucchini for dinner. This morning he had a waffle again (and actually ate about 1/4 of it!) and for dinner he'll get avocado and banana rolled in graham cracker crumbs, I think. He had a hard time holding it the first time, so I hope this helps with that problem.

Very impressive!! Has Alex gagged at all? I gave C avocado mushed up on his tray last night because I didn't think he'd be able to pick it up so you'll have to let me know how that goes. He loved it although he did need a bath after. :) Do you make your own waffles? I should make a batch & freeze some.

He did gag on the carrot and on the waffle initially, but nothing too serious. It was clearly gagging and not choking, so we just let him handle it and he did a great job. We tried the avocado for lunch, but he couldn't pick it up, so he just mushed it in his fist and licked his fingers. He didn't seem to like the graham cracker crumbs on the banana, so I'll just offer him a piece with peel on it next, that he'll be able to grab (kind of a handle). I just gave him part of my eggo waffle, didn't make my own. (insert blushing smiley).
