Help me!!!

My LO, now a month old, is the champion of sleep fighting.  I don't know what to do to get this child to sleep.  I was reading the post about baby only sleeping when held, and the responses were good, but my son HATES swaddling.  He will sleep in his RNP at night, but am trying to get him into his crib.  He hates it.  I watch him every night fight to keep his eyes open.  They will close for a brief time and then fly open.  I keep telling him that mom and dad are not that exciting and he isn't missing anything, but to no avail.  Don't know how many more nights I can take sleeping in the recliner chair with him.   Any other advice.  He uses a pacifier.

  • Do you BF or FF?  My LO sometimes fights sleep briefly but as soon as I put him to the breast he gets sleepy and will usually fall asleep nursing.  If you FF you could try warming the milk and then giving it him right before bedtime.  It may make him sleepy and stay asleep longer.  Sorry I don't have better suggestions!

  • My little one will only sleep slanted as well. He loves to sleep in his swing, rock n play, and carseat but he hates the bassinet. Ive just been giving him his way. And nursing him really helps him dose off. My baby is really gassy so alot of times he just needs gas drops or to burp.

  • IMO the first month is all about survival (i.e. sleeping in a recliner). My doctor said that, after 1 month, if we aren't beginning to put her in her own crib to sleep and following a schedule, he's "going to get on us." My LO hates being swaddled in the SwaddleMe blankets, but would rather be swaddled in a receiving blanket. My doc also said to lay her down when she's sleepy, but not asleep to avoid confusion upon waking up--this hasn't worked for us yet :) For now, we are trying to establish a routine and lay her down in her crib for naps during the day.

Give yourself a break--you're still getting to know your LO!!

  • Thanks!!!  I am just very hard on myself and don't give myself any credit.  Just do the best i can and go from there.  He did sleep in his crib for an hour today!!!  Whoo hooo!!!  It's the little things that excite me!!
