?: Do you have to send out birth announcements?

I was wondering is it absolutely required that you send out birth announcements? Or is it more of a 'you can if you have the extra money but not required'?  And if it is something that you are supposed to do how far after the birth are you supposed to send them?
I am STM but didnt with my first...purely because I wasnt financially able...and a smaller but more significant side I had no real family to send it to

  • We never did, and it was just because we didn't get around to it.  I doubt we'll do it this time.

DH and I married 8 years. Mom of three, stepmom of one.

  • No they arent required.  But if you do send them it is usually within a couple weeks of the delivery.

I sent them out last time and I plan on doing it again (I already picked the one I want to buy).  Ya, they are a bit pricey, especially when you factor in postage, but I think it's worth it.  I'll be saving money by taking the photos myself.  They'll probably go out when LO is about a month old- I'll take the pics when he's around 2 weeks and then order the announcements right away.  I personally love getting anything other than junk mail and bills in the mail so that's probably another reason I'm doing it.

Oh I do know what you mean...Confused

Ok....thanks everyone....I will definitely think about them Smile *pressure off

  • I plan to.  Just because they are so cute and I love to receive them.  I definitely don't think they are required and wouldn't be doing it if we didn't have the extra cash.

    lol...very true!
*shrugs* Little Prince is the pregnancy/birth that I fully embraced from conception....just...i dont know...overwhelmed? Dont know really know how to express it....with my daughter was so much anger and shame...showing a bit of happiness seemed like a betrayal almost....so now I am trying to obviously do too much

  • Definitely not a requirement.  If it weren't for family that wasn't on FB I wouldn't do it (and don't know for sure I will).  If I do it, it will be really minimal.
  • Where I live in the northeast and in my circle of friends everyone does it. I wouldnt care though if I didnt get one, its up to you!
  • Most people around here do it... but it isn't required by any means. I sent them out last year with DS, and will do them again this year.

We didn't do birth announcements, but for the thank yous for all the gifts we rcv'd after he was born, we included his pic on it so people could see him (if they hadn't already)

  • we never send out birth announcments.  Have you thought of even a cute email - with a picture?  this is easy and cheap.  now you can do things like hallmark online greeting cards- where you send them an Announcement that way.

What a great idea! I don't have a strong feeling either way about birth announcements. I'll probably do them but won't get too upset if I don't. Thank you notes are another story so of I was going to skip one, I'd skip the announcements.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • For our daughter we sent them, but I used the photo kiosk at CVS or Walgreens. They are definitely not as nice as some I've seen but hey, they did the trick! I think they often do online only coupons too, good luck!

  • We didn't for our first.  Didn't even think about it.  Probably won't for this one either.

  • its a personal choice but i am a first time mom and am def not sending them out.  partly bc anyone i would send them to will already know when she is born. and partly bc i know as soon as i get one i look at it then it goes right in the trash so to me its a waste. if i were to do anything id do an email if ppl were that desperate for a picture. but again, anyone i would send it to would have already seen a picture either by phone or email anyway.
