Speech and OT

My daughter has a speech delay, around 18 months we got her into Early Intervenmtion and private speech.  Around 2 she was having issues with things touching her fingers, and the speech therapoist mentioned OT.  The isue kind of resolved itself but I see her very very unfocused I know she is 2 and that is normal but she is all over the place at times.  At speech on Monday the therapist brough it up in terms of attention and a link between inattention and sensory issues.  My question is has anyone experienced this?

Re: Speech and OT

  • DS has very short focus and goes from one task to another within seconds sometimes. He also has a lot of sensory issues going on, hates if anything touches his hands, does not do messy play and never touches his food with fingers. We have OT working with him to fix the issues. He shows some improvement but has a long way to go. However, having said the above, my DS is diagnosed on ASD. This may not be the case for your daughter. But working with an OT will definitely give them an option of exploring new ways to see/touch things.

  • Yes, my son had a difficult time attending to speech therapy because of sensory issues. Now that an OT sits in on his therapies and does sensory activities before they get started, he gets a lot more out of the speech therapy and his language has exploded.

  • You should research some sensory activities you can do w/ your child right before her therapy.  Look up "sensory diet" as well.  If your child is getting an adequate (not too much or too little) amount of sensory input it should help quite a bit.  Also look into a special sensory seat cushion to use during therapy.  They use these for a lot of higher functioning kids with ASD.  Hope this helps
  • Spoke with Early Intervention today and we are going forward with testing just to be safe.  Looking at sensory diet now, kind of confused are these things I should incorporate inot a day, not all at once but pick a few activities.  I am looking specifically at sensorysmarts.com.
