Sterilizer residue on bottles

I use my sterilizer only occasionally for my breast pump parts.  DD has never taken a bottle (sigh), so that is the only thing we've really used it for.  Recently, I noticed some brown residue in the bottles after using it, and there is a slight brown tinge to the plastic tray that is built in the unit.  The bottles wiped clean (I still ran them through the dishwasher before using them again), but I've tried wiping down the tray in the unit and it still looks somewhat discolored.  I do wipe out the excess water in the base of the unit after every use, but now I'm kind of skeptical if it is doing the job it is supposed to.  Brown residue does not equal sanitary to me, lol.  Anyway, has anyone had this happen with their sterilizer if they've used one?  Is it ruined, maybe I wasn't using enough water?  Should I just throw it out entirely?

  • I would have white residue from the boiling water

Mine did that too. I tried more water, less water, wiping it out all the time.  It never made a difference.  The bottles and parts were up above it though and seemed clear so I gave up.  That's probably not all that helpful :)

I tried all these things too! I had convinced myself that maybe I was doing something wrong, lol!  I think I am going to just throw it out.  It was not an expensive model and my SIL got it for me on a whim (I didn't register for it), so I don't feel too bad about throwing it away to clear up some space on my counter.  I'm not sanitizing and then hand washing, that's just dumb.  Thanks for your thoughts, ladies!
