Feeding themselves?

This weekend DS has wanted to feed himself and gets mad if you try to feed him.  He will eat his finger food with no problem on his own.  DH was gone all weekend and I told him DS was hard to feed.  Today DS was home with DH because I have camp.  First thing DH said to me when I walked in was that LO didn't eat much at lunch and was difficult to feed.  I said I told you so.  He said he didn't want to eat and thought he didn't feel well at lunch.  Same thing happened at dinner.  I said let him try himself.  DS tried to dip spoon into his food and feed himself.  He actually did surprisingly well at first.  Fixed one food item at time since we didn't know if he felt well (think he is teething).  Then, he tried to start eating with his fingers.  After a while I think he was still hungry so he would let us feed him some.  It took him over 45 min instead of 15 min.

So, long story short...sorry not really.  Are any of your LO's feeding themselves all the time.  We say DS wants to be Mr. Independent!

Re: Feeding themselves?

  • We usually only give her things she can feed herself.  The only thing she'll eat with help is yogurt.  I give her all finger foods and yes it takes her a long time to eat.  Dinner is usually her biggest meal and she'll eat for 30 - 45 minutes most nights.  I start her before DH gets home (start her at 5:45, he gets home at 6) we eat and clean up and DD is usually just finishing.

This is the situation here too.  Even with my help, the yogurt gets very messy.  Maya tries to grab the spoon by the "business end", not the handle, and gets some yogurt in her belly but plenty on her face and hands too.  I freeze the yogurt into little blobs she can pick up and eat herself.  Everything else she eats with her hands- even cottage cheese (which she loves)

  • Yep, we did baby led weaning so I have never put food in her mouth. She eats 3 full meals a day by feeding herself! She still makes a pretty big mess with yogurt/applesauce/etc though.
