Chicken Pox???

Last Thursday I noticed a small red bump on DS leg, it appeared very similar to a mosquito bite and we were outdoors so I just kept an eye on it, no change until Saturday when he woke up and I noticed 6 or 7 bumps of similar size now on both legs. He was scheduled for his 9 month check up today and so we decided to wait and see what the bumps did or if more appeared. Well DH hurt his eye (scratched cronea) so we had to take him to Urgent care and figured while we're there we'll have DS seen too. MD did full check of DS and after close examination gave us the dx of chicken pox. Treat symptoms etc. We came home. DS was still his normal happy self, checked for fever low grade 99.9 so skipped the tylenol and put him down for a nap. About an hour later when he woke up, his whole body was covered in small red rash type bumps, trunk, arms, feet, legs. And with that came a fever 102.9 treated with tylenol and motrin, last night was rough, little to no sleep for him. Yesterday he ate and drank like a champ, more than normal actually. This morning fever is down but spots still there and he's lost his appetite. I know its rare for a baby to get chicken pox but has anyone else experienced this. We go for follow up this afternoon and I'm sure we'll get a definite diagnosis then but I always thought chicken pox would like blister and scab?? The larger bumps seem to just be staying the same size and not changing???

Re: Chicken Pox???

  • I had chicken pox ages ago, but if I remember right the only bumps that scabbed were the ones I scratched at. If he's not scratching them, they should be okay. If he seems itchy, ask the doctor if it's okay to use calamine lotion or give an oatmeal bath to make him more comfortable. Poor little guy, hope he feels better soon!

  • The MD said it's actually better when they get it this young because its often a milder version and they can't really scratch the spots yet so there is less scarring. None of his spots are turning into blisters or anything yet so we'll see how it progresses.

  • My LO had spots on her legs a couple weeks ago (didn't turn out to be pox) but you might want to check with your pedi and let them know that he has it.  They might want to reschedule his appt because they probably don't want to expose the other babies to the virus, and the pox might interfere with his shots.
