moby for bigger baby

I love the moby but now that DD is getting bigger, it's harder to wrap her facing me. She arches her back and gets frustrated that she can't see what's in front of us.  The chest-to-chest hold is great at home but not when we go out.  I really don't want to buy a new carrier, so are there other options for holding a bigger baby?  Has anyone done a hip hold, or is there something else I'm missing?  I'm not ready to put her on my back yet, I feel like she's still a little too young for that.

  • What about the ergo? It works great for older babies and has a weight limit of 40lbs. That weight limit is true as well-I can wear my 33lb toddler on my back comfortably.

  • Wraps can do a zillion holds. Check out the Carry of the Week (COTW) posts on thebabywearer.com wrapping forum to learn about them. That said, because a Moby is a stretchy wrap, that does limit your options and comfort. Many parents find that a Moby maxes out in comfort at about 15 lbs when it gets too saggy. Also ditto PP that a Moby should never be used for back carries. If  you like wrapping and want more versatility, look into woven wraps. They can do front, back, and hip carries from NB to child.
  • I only used the wrap until they were 15 pounds or so, after that it got too saggy. I really like the Beco, but also used a Maya ring sling with DS2 for awhile.

I didn't really wear my kids on my back until they were both closer to nine months, but wearing them tummy-to-tummy in a SSC was still fine between 6-9 months. hth

  • Are you not supposed to do front facing carries in the moby anymore?? I did it all the time with my first once she was older,  making sure she was properly supported and not just dangling bjorn-style. I used my moby for a long time, although as she got bigger I used it mainly just for getting around airports.
