50 shades of awful writing. NBR

I can't be alone in thinking this book is awful. Perhaps it's because I'm an English teacher? It's very poorly written! I'm on bed rest and was told to read it by several different people. Complete let down.

I haven't jumped on the 50 shades band wagon, but my friend who read it said the same thing.

  • Heard from a lot  of people it super sucked.
  • Its not about the writing. Its way more than that

I heard the story sucked too, regardless of writing style. Also, I read that "Argh" is used as a passionate/sexual noise repeatedly. Who yells Argh during sex? A pirate?

  • Yes, I gave up halfway through.  It reminded me of a Sweet Valley High book with sex thrown in.

  • Yeah, I couldn't finish it.  It was terrible.  I'm an English teacher too, maybe that made it harder to deal with.  I just couldn't deal with the horrible writing.

  • I read the whole series and enjoyed it.  It is definitely not a classic novel, but for a quick simple read it was on track.  I also liked the story and the idea that love can conquer all and help heal people.  I didn't love the "control" portion of the book and at times found it challenging to read, but I think that was the point.

  • I heard it was terrible writing so I didn't even bother. It would just aggrivate me.

  • I gave it a try out of peer pressure but yeah... kinda like grading a high school paper where you can tell the kid used thesaurus every seventh word or so. But oh man, the moms on my facebook will defend it to the death!  My favorite defense so far - "But it really does have a plot..."  Uh huh, very good honey.. books have plots and words and punctuation, just like buildings have floors and doors and windows.

  • I stopped reading it a quarter of the way through.  I'm confident that I made the right decision.  This was the most awful book I have read in a while.

  • I ordered the sample on my kindle, due to the overwhelming talk about this book.  Didn't even make it through the sample...it seems like it's written for teenage girls.  Pretty terrible.

  • I've been struggling for weeks trying to finish the 1st book, I finally just gave up.  My time is better spent doing other things.  Its not well written, and if there is a love story in there, its a sick and twisted one.  I've actually had women tell me I didn't like the book because of where I am in my life. Pah-Lease!

    I loved this review:

  • THANK YOU!!!! I love this thread!  Every time I see my SIL and cousin post on FB about this stupid book I roll my eyes and gag a little bit.  The woman who "wrote" this isn't even a writer.  She was writing this as fanfiction of Twilight......need I say more?  It makes me really sad that people defend this kind of writing.  It makes me think that no one reads real authors anymore and have no idea what a good book is.  I think the entire thing is just ridiculous.

    Haha. This is awesome.

Also, who refers to themselves as having an inner goddess?  I hear she says that repeatedly throughout the book as well as refering to her vag as "down there".  I'll admit I never got past the sample on kindle either.  But seriously?  What erotic author refers to a vagina as down there?  Just completely stupid.

I totally agree.  I really enjoyed the series.  I have only read about 5 books in the past 5 years (3 of them being the 50 shades trilogy) so maybe I am clueless about good books but I loved them.  Something about Christian Grey makes you hate him and think he is crazy, yet you kinda wish he were real.  And yours. HAHA Stick out tongue

Oh it's true.  The story really does suck.  I heard that the 2nd and 3rd books were much better than the first, so I went ahead and read them too.  Nope, they didn't get any better.  One of my mom's co-workers was trying to convince her to read the books because it's such a "beautiful love story".  IMO a beautiful love story wouldn't consist of a guy who is a psycho control freak that has a tendency to speak to his wife as if she were a dog.  And the sex scenes never even gave me a "lady boner" (my husband's mature term for why women read the books).

That 50 Shades of Suck site is amazing!! :)

All of this. I read it because it was my book club's pick. I made myself finish it but I refuse to read the other 2. Besides the awful writing and storyline, I like to "fall in love" with the male character when I read a love story. I hated Grey. He was awful and completely not attractive to me at all.

And yeah, my DH didn't "benefit" from the book like others. haha. It just didn't do it for me.

  • Agreed- I thought it was really strange that so many people jumped on the 50 shades bandwagon. I read a lot and I have read my fair share of literary trash but this was one of the worst!
  • Yeah, I read a ll 3.  I read all 3 twilight books too.  The writing sucked in all of them, but I kept wanting to know what happened next, so I kept reading.  I couldn't stand the frequent use of the word "clamor" and all it's various forms...I never knew people who clamored so much!  "Down there" didn't bother me as much as the repetitive use of "my sex."

The books entertained me, but I agree, I was a little distracted by the terrible writing.

  • I'm also an English teacher. I agree that the quality of writing is horrendous, but it is a fun read that I find entertaining. I thought the same of Twilight.

  • It's funny that this thread came up today. A lady who works with my husband just sent these books along to me today. I have heard such horrible reviews of the writing that I never would have sought these out on my own. But since I now have them in my possession, I am going to read them. Pure morbid curiosity.
