Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sitting/standing in the crib

We slept trained (modified Ferber) about a month ago. It took about a week to see consistent results. Now DD is rolling onto her side to sleep (which is new) and when she stirs at night, she ends up on her belly and immediately sits up and cries. I don't think she knows how to lay herself back down. We were going in and laying her down, but that only worked for a few days. Now she pulls up to standing and is screaming! She can sit herself down but she can't lay down. Last night I went in about ten times after putting her to bed and she just kept popping up immediately. She would be standing before I even left the room. She finally stayed down (my H basically held her belly down) but she was up 2.5 hours later and it was the same thing. I left her for a while figuring she needs to figure it out and went in about every 20 minutes. After two hours she was still standing and screaming on and off. I laid her down and held her belly and she went to sleep. But was up and hour later. What are we supposed to do? I'm beyond frustrated. I feel guilty for letting her cry and guilty for giving in. Help!!!

Re: Sitting/standing in the crib

  • We are going through something very similar. I'm sorry I don't have an answe. We just keep laying him back down. He cries until he finally falls asleep. He does like his lovie do we are thinking about putting his Scout stuffed animal in the crib that he can push the sleepy time button. We are hoping this helps.

  • Like most everything else, this is a phase ... and in my experience a short one, but it didn't feel that way at the time.  I suggest you set your expectations to wake up for 3-4x a night (whether CIO or "giving in") for a bit keeping in mind it's temporary.  When my LO learned to pull up to a stand, sit up on her own and crawl while teething all in the same two weeks, sleep was rough.

We "give in" in our house, so every time she cried 3-4x a night, most times 5 min of holding would settle her; in the worst times DH (PT SAHD) would let her play quietly on the floor an hour (e.g. 2-3am).  To practice laying down, I playfully pushed my LO down on the bed, ker-ploop!  For the past week LO is STTN again, so obviously it was a phase -- we didn't DO anything to change it.  Now if LO scrambles up to standing, I can leave and most times she'll settle down herself!  But if she's thrown her pacifier out of the crib, I know I am in trouble. Smile

I am sorry for the upset in the routine.  Wishing your LO is STTN again really soon!!!

  • Took about a week for DD to start "laying back down" after she learned sitting up and pulling up in her crib. It felt like a month! Hope its a short one for you :)

  • We experienced this at naptime.  We tried a few things, but completely leaving her alone to CIO was the only thing that worked.  Us going in every 5, 10, 15 mins (like we did initially sleep training) did not work at all.  It only seemed to make her realize that if she kept crying, we'd come back in.  Its really tough!  I had to go sit outside on the deck so I couldn't hear her (brought the video monitor so I could see her).  The first couple of naps she cried straight through for 30 mins, so I got her and that was the end of 'naptime'.  Then it got better - 15 mins of crying before she fell asleep, 5 mins, and now its maybe a minute or two of protest before she falls asleep.  It coincided with her really clingy anxiety phase, and teething, so that may have had something to do with it.  Hang in there!

This is us too.   We're a "give in" household too.   The only thing we didn't do was let him play, lol.   Occasionally I have "bed shared" for an hour or two just to get a few more hours of semi-sleep just to make it at work.  My LO was finally STTN 8-9 hours  and then BAM! the crawling, sitting up, standing phase started along with his first 2 teeth, bottom front.  UGH, it has been very rough here.
