I am purchasing the infant car seat- chicco keyfit 30. I know this can be insalled without the base but is it a lot easier with the base? Trying to decide if we should get an extra for both DH's car and grandparents. DH will likely do daycare pickup each day and grandparents will take 1-2 days of daycare so will need the carseat. Thoughts?
Re: How much did you use extra bases?
If it were me I would.. the reason I would is its a whole lot easier to snap in a carseat then to buckle it in - and I don't trust DH or my parents to install the seat properly with a seatbelt - but I can put the base in either car and then they can snap in and go
(I bought my bases second hand.. I'm not sure why but I'm more ok with bases then seats bought used - I did have signed documents that they weren't in a crash and not expired, etc)

all of this, except for the second hand 2nd base. I didn't/don't trust my DH/Mil to get the seat in right, so we bought another base for DH's car and my mom and mil split one for their cars.
totally worth it, 100%

I would get an extra base for the grandparents, and DH too if you can swing it. They are just as safe installed without the base, but I think it's harder to get it right, and some people do tend to slack off after installing it over and over. With the extra bases you don't have to worry about that.

To me, extra bases for anyone who is going to regularly transport your child in their car is a matter of safety and therefore a must have. It wouldn't even be a quiestion of affordability - I'd find the money to esure my child's safety.
Sometimes even well meaning people put convenience over safety and it would be easy for anyone to do a poor job of securing a car seat without a base, or to make a mistake or put it at the wrong angle, even with the best onf intentions.
I would definitely get the extra bases. We had one in each car, and it made splitting drop off and pick up duties so much easier.
Plus, I liked knowing it was installed securely (we had them checked by our local fire dept.), verses starting from "scratch" each time.
We also had a Chicco Keyfit 30, FWIW.
