swing or RNP?

Which do you prefer? Do you let your baby sleep in the swing at night?

Re: swing or RNP?

  • My baby refused to sleep in his bassinet, he would sleep in the swing during the day but I didn't want to do that during the night. We bought the Rock n Play two days ago and ive gotten two good nights of sleep since then.

So if I had to choose between the two, I would say Rock n Play

  • It really depends. He seems to sleep better in the rnp. But likes the swing when he is more awake.

We have both and she sleeps in both.  The swing we have only done during the day when she wouldn't settle down.  She sleeps in the RNP at night right by the couch so I can easily take care of her.  If I had to choose one it would be RNP just b/c it is so portable and takes up no space when folded.

  • RNP is a must for us. LO will tolerate the swing if she's in a really good mood, but the RNP is where it's at. And like a PP mentioned it's very portable and folds up small. It's also nice in the middle of the night when you are half asleep and can't think/walk straight...you just put the RNP next to your bed and reach your hand out and give it a rock.

  • RNP.  My baby doesn't care much for the swing.  She'll tolerate it, but she never sleeps in it.

  • RNP all the way.  LO is not a fan of the swing at all.

  • She hates her swing.

We don't have a rnp, but ive heard good things.

She hates her flat bassinet that we have downstairs.

In our room, we have a pnp with newborn napper that she sleeps pretty well in at night. She doesn't really like vibration either.

Don't have a swing, but the RNP is an absolute must for us.  Adalyn sleeps and naps in it, and it's great because it's at an angle and helps with her reflux.  It's also really portable and great for when we go to Abuelita's house. :)

  • Be careful of the RNP I did some research on it and it's been known to cause major health problems in infants who slept in them at night.  I can't remember the name but it causes shortening of the neck muscles and sever flat spots on lo heads that can result in months of therapy and helmets.

    NOT WORTH THE RISK IMO

This is only true if you leave the baby in the RNP for hours on end.  This is true for parents who also leave babies in bouncers or swings for hours on end.  They can develop flat spots on their heads and they may face one direction constantly, which can cause torticollis (sp?).  As long as you pick them up out of that and hold them, and not leave them in there for, say, 4-5 hours at a time as the longest, you will be fine.  Our daughter sleeps in the RNP, but she never stays in it for longer than 4 to 5 hours since she wakes up to eat.

Yes but four or five hours night after night is what can cause this. I talked to my pediatrician about it and she said that she has seen a link to shortened neck muscles and RNP in her own practice, I'm not saying it will happen to everyone but it can happen. Some of the reviews on amazon is what made me ask.

Like I said for me a little extra sleep is not worth the risk. And I have a 18 month old who never slept more than two hours at a time for almost nine months so I know how hard it can be.

  • We don't have a RNP but just got a swing.  We only use it when she's overtired, fussy, and won't go to sleep.  It does calm her down and she'll fall asleep, but wakes up once we turn it off.  We don't let her sleep in it for long stretches.
