Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Vacationing with your baby

How many have gone on a trip with thier baby or planning a trip? If so, what trip did you take and how did it go? My in-laws are taking us on a cruise in the fall (DS will be almost 11 months) and I want to take him. What should I do. Any tips for me?

  • We took DS to Jamaica at 6 months and it was way easier than expected! Bring necessities and some toys you will be fine! Have extra sunscreen and plan for some fussy days you will be surprised how easy it really is! Speaking from experience I brought way too much clothes for him, and could have gotten by with bringing shirts that matched with the same shorts for two of the dinners we planned and so on since we were on the beach so much he really spent most of his time in swim shorts anyways. I am sure you have been thinking about the sun, and the UV rash guards are awesome and comfortable. I also found a more comfortable neoprene lifejacket at walmart that he doesn't mind at all! Good luck!

  • We flew to Israel with 9m old twins (22 hour flight) for 3 weeks.  It was fine.  We only took the bare essentials.  carseat, stroller, clothes, diapers, food.  We took very few toys, because they seem to play with random things anways.  At least you won't have jetlag to deal with.  Request a pack n play for your baby to sleep in.

  • FYI:  Some cruise lines charge just as much for a baby as they do for an adult.

We've flown quite a bit when the kids were babies, and I'm flying with my LO this week again.  I use my Ergo in the airport and bring random toys and something to watch a movie on to keep her occupied.

  • I will reiterate the above comments...my LO has been on some 15 flights and she's not even 10 months yet.

Airport: Plan extra time at security {particularly when traveling with milk, bottles of liquid, etc. }, travel with a baby bjorn/ergo/etc...it is the simplest way to manuever the aiport.

Plane: Get creative with "toys" - I've asked for extra plastic cups from the flight attendants for LO to play with. I also use my ipad with einstein movies, books, flash cards and baby-oriented games loaded...in other words, less is more.

Try not to stress about it...babies pick up on your mood. Just go with it...and your baby will be just fine. :) Have fun!!!
