Baby Shower; what items are you buying before?

This is our first child, so we are doing the nursury ourselfs, completely (crib, rocker, dresser, etc.).  We also think its appropriate to purchase all of the neccessary items ourself, so we'll be purchasing the stroller, carseat, etc.  We are not asking for any of these "big ticket" items on our registry.  Isn't this the appropriate way to do it?

What are you asking for? What are you buying?

Re: Baby Shower; what items are you buying before?

  • That's exactly what we've done as well.  We're buying all our big ticket items beforehand and leaving people the choice between items starting at 3.00$ up to 120.00$ (our baby carrier).

It's not inappropriate to put big ticket items on a registry, we just chose not to.  I rather get a lot of smaller cheaper things than just 2 or 3 big ones.  IMO you get more out of it that way and people seem to want to participate more if there are things that are more budget-friendly on a registry.

  • It depends on your family and friends. Sometimes grandparents like to buy a big item like the crib. Also some people like to go in on a group gift to buy the bigger items. I would put them on the registry and see what happens.
  • My parents wanted to buy us the crib, glider and dresser/changing table.  So we let them do that - these items did not go on the registry.  If my parents didn't buy us the 3 items we were going to buy them on our own.

We did register for big ticket items, in my family and even at work a lot of people go together and buy the big ticket items.  Grandparents and sisters have already told us they want to get us something big that will be used for a long time (ie. car seats, strollers etc).  So we put them on the registry, if we don't get the neccesities we will go out and buy them but if someone wants to buy them for us, we will let them :)  one less expense for us.

  • We did the same thing as you - we bought all the furniture, stroller, carseats, etc. on our own and put a lot of the other items on the registry.  I think our biggest ticket items were around $100.

  • My ILs have very clearly stated that they'd like to buy the furniture for us.  I know my parents would also like to get us a big ticket item like the travel system or pack n' play.  I also have a lot of aunts who are going crazy over this baby and would like to go for some of the bigger things.

I had initially said to DH that we should buy the furniture, and not burden anyone else with that, but then his parents spoke up.  So, I just threw it all on the registry and we'll see what happens!

  • We bought our crib, glider and dresser/nightstand ourselves.  We registered for all the other stuff we wanted but don't expect to get any of the big ticket items so as BRU has sales/coupons we have been buying some of the bigger stuff ourselves (we bought our pack 'n play).  Also, I think our parents are probably going to buy the monitor, stroller, and car seat so that leaves mostly things under $75 on our registry which I think is totally reasonable.

  • My parents wanted to buy us the crib. We're buying the dresser/changing table, glider, and all the nursery decor & extras like changing pad, etc, except for some extra crib sheets. We have a pack n play and our travel system on the registry, because I think a lot of aunts and uncles will want to go in together, and if not, then we would really love to use the completion discount!

  • We bought all the big ticket items ourselves. People love to buy clothes so I would not worry about not having enough on your registry!

  • That is just what we have done.  We have the dresser, glider, crib, changing table, and stroller, as well as a bouncer and swing that were passed down to us from my niece that outgrew them.

I have smaller essential things on my registry so far, as well as a breast pump and cloth diapers, though they are both expensive.  My MIL kind of gave me a hard time saying that some people will want to buy big items and they won't have the option to, so that is that.

  • I am putting literally everything on my registry.  I want the completion discounts!

Also, we don't expect anyone to buy our big items, but for both of my sisters people have absolutely gone in on a group gift and given travel systems, changing tables, etc.

We have planned so that if we get literally not one, single gift that we can afford everything ourselves, but the registry helps me keep track.

Our parents wanted to know what all big stuff we wanted so I put everything on the registry. The only thing I am buying beforehand is the cradle mattress and sheets. The cradle is being hand built by my dad and not a standard size, so Amazon is the only place I could find them.

  • I left a few bigger things on my registry in case family member wanted to go in together on them. Of course, our bigger items were still all under $200. My parents bought the crib, in-laws bought the mattress, and my 2 sister-in-laws bought the swing. So it is nice to have a few higher priced items on there for those situations.

  • We had our crib, mattress and rocker gifted to us.  We plan on buying our car seat and our snap n go.  I think we might also buy our pack n play.  Leaving the only two big ticket items - a baby carrier and a stroller.  I can see the parents on both sides chipping in to buy the stroller as a Christmas gift.

I just put the crib and changing table on layaway because it was on sale and we're moving soon so we didn't want to transport it. Going to buy the matching dresser once we move. I also think I'm going to buy the stroller and car seat, these are just things I feel I should buy.
  • I am lucky to come from a family with weird traditions like the grandma buying the nursery (usualy its while im in the labor room but i convinced my mom to buy it for the baby shower). Also in my community everyone trys to up each other on gifts so im not buying anything till after shower cuz im sure everyone that is coming will be buying the big items plus clothes.

  • We put everything on our registry... mostly because it was easier for me to keep track of but also because my parents wanted to get us a couple of the big ticket items like the crib. They live in a different state so I knew it would be easier for them to find it on the registry instead of me describing the crib over the phone. But we really don't expect anyone else to buy the expensive things.
