Do your LOs know....

ears, nose, etc?  Just wondering, because SIL was saying that her DD (turned 1 on Sat.) is really good at pointing them out, but I am really thinking she's got to be exaggerating.  I've been noticing her doing that more and more.

However, maybe more kids are doing this and I'm just really behind on "teaching" Ty?

Re: Do your LOs know....

  • Not at all.  I've been working on "touch your head"  But she just giggles at me.  She claps on command so I figured this is the next thing.

  • No way, I personally think a lot of mom's exaggerate what their children are able to do.

I haven't really been teaching her that...other than singing "Head, shoulders, knees and toes....". So no, she does not.

  • Eh, I think it might be possible for her LO to know one, maybe two, of the body parts but I think keeping the whole slew of them apart from one another and especially pointing to LO's own parts is reaching pretty far. Just seems like they wouldn't have the coordination to point to just a specific area yet. And the only reason I think one part, like nose, might be possible is because DD can point to the kitty on the wall right above her changing table. I've been showing her the pig, cat, and monkey because she thinks it's funny when I make their sounds but she specifically knows the kitty and will point to the general area if I ask her where it is. The monkey and pig she doesn't do so well with. But she really likes kitties since we have a cat, they're BFF's Smile

  • H knows Nose and Ears... but that is all. No exaggeration here either... We drilled it for 2 weeks and she will point to her nose. And then we live near a small regional airport, so we would cover her ears and say cover your ears when we were outside and now she will cover when she hears a plane or when you say ears...

    That is all though.

  • I think at this age kids can mimic what you do all the time.  Its very possible if she worked on it repeatedly

DH was impressed that Bell can crawl over and pick out her monkey stuffed animal when asked, but i had to break it to him that i do it with her every morning so i can pour myself a cup of coffee.  So after a few months of "go get your monkey" she will do it.

  • DD cannot point to it (or to anything, that I've seen), but she does look at my nose when I ask her, "where is momma's nose?"

There are several things around the house that she'll look directly at if you ask her "Where is _____?" They are all things that I ask her about a lot. She knows her stuffed owl, rocking horse, book, blocks, the names of both of our cats. She can't say any words other than mama and dada, but she definitely knows what some words mean and shows me by looking directly at them when asked about them.

This I believe. (Plus I know you are not dramatic)  That is 2 body parts but 3 etc like the OP said.  I do not believe.  I believe any child can point out 1-2 not really knowing what they are but knowing what to point to when the hear the certain sound you make.

For eg every time you say bye bye (even in a cauual convo or on TV) LO will automatically wave.  Even if nobody is leaving.  He does not get the concept but he knows when people say that sound they usually wave.

Don't be sorry at all!  SIL is a bit of a attention w**re, so it doesn't shock me that she'd exaggerate this, but A has always done a lot of things early, based on milestone development, but lately I've been like "really"?

For example, another thing... apparently A is "running", literally running.  She just started to get comfortable walking 2-3 weeks ago.  Saw her at the party Saturday.  Definitely not running!

  • DS cannot point anything out yet.  I always point out body parts to him but whether he understands, I can't judge yet.  He does know several things by name though - book, car, shoes are the main ones.

  • J knows "feet".....but that is it. He looks down but does not point.
  • Her dr. mentioned it as something to work on at her 1 yr visit, so I've been working on it here and there, but she can't point to any of them yet.  She is really into pointing lately, though, so maybe it will be soon?

ETA:  I asked about this around a month ago and most people weren't working on it yet: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/65218576.aspx

  • I think a lot of what our babies pick up at this age are what the parents stress.  If she is seriously, daily working on something, then I have no doubt he can do it (nose and toes, for example).  But I think most of it is mimicking things that are repeated over and over.  I don't know that I believe he knows all the body parts simply by someone saying the word.

C does not know his body parts, but the only time we work on it is when we read his 2 flip books that focus on nose, toes, belly button, etc.

  • Some of DDs favorite books talk about the body parts, so she knows and can point out nose and eyes on us, herself, the dog, her toys, etc.  We don't drill it in, but there has been a fair amount of repitition.

  • Nope. But she does know belly button! I'm starting to teach her the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, but she doesn't know them yet.

Now I feel like a bragosaurus, but Em can run. Eeek! So hard to keep up! I wish she'd ever sit down! Don't think that is going to happen.

As for the pointing to body parts, I think kids can learn things at different rates, but its kind of hard to believe that he/she would know a BUNCH of body parts at 1. Em knows her nose, and can point to it, and also point to ours. She also knows her belly button and can point to ours, but that's all. Let me also try to tone down my bragosaurus talking by stating that I stay home with LO, am a certified ECE teacher, and my mom has a master's degree in education specializing in birth to 5. So, LO might know a few more things etc, but only b/c mom and grandma practice with her all the time!

  • My 13 month old nephew knows his eyes and toes. He is incredibly advanced though.. He can say a ton of words - mommy, daddy, puppy, happy, toast, please, turtle, purple, bear...

Then there's my baby. Who can't walk, can't say a word, waves sometimes at nothing, claps occasionally and still gets swaddled for naps. Ha ha!

DS knows to point at my nose, and my toes. I don't really think its any different then them waving goodbye when you're leaving. If I have my work clothes on and I'm walking to the door DS waves goodbye. He also takes my keys to the front door and tries to unlock it. He also has plugged my charger into an accidentally left uncovered outlet too. And evey time he picks up a cord he takes it to that same outlet. He does a whole lot of stuff that he sees me doing. He puts my phone up to my ear. He gives me kisses. He was rolling at two months. Crawling at five. Walking at 10. But... He still doesn't know how to clap lol.

Honestly, it's all about the kid, and what you focus on. If you've never tied to teach LO to do those things, of COURSE he won't know. And who cares if he doesn't? I'm sure your LO does something that hers doesn't. I think kids are smarter then most people give them credit for, and some kids are born thinkers. Some are more doers, and some are watchers.

Joey touches his toes, head, hair, and ear when asked, but he can't seem to figure out nose.  :)  Also, he only points to them on himself, not on me or on pictures.

I figured out he knew them because I was reading a book to him that mentioned a "bumpy brown toad," and when I said it, he grabbed his TOES.  It was adorable.  After I realized that is what he thought I said, I asked him a bunch of other body parts just to see what he could do.

  • DD knows nose and eyes- on her stuffed animals and on me, but not on herself.  She's always pointing at and touching my nose and eyes though so there's been a lot of repetition.  And it's not 100%- sometimes I ask her where my nose is and she points to my eye instead, but I'd say 80% of the time she gets it right.

  • ds doesn't know any of his body parts.  I can't even get him to sit still for head shoulders knees & toes or patty cake.  He also doesn't clap or wave or point and isn't quite walking.  I feel like I don't have any time to work with him on these things since dh and I both work ft and we have an older dd as well.  I find myself too tired to do much of anything after getting home from work.  It sucks.

I don't find your comment baggy at all.  She however, kept going on and on about how LO was running, yet she is still very unsteady on her feet so we all knew she's not running.  And I highly doubt she knows all of the body parts SIL said.  A few, yes definitely, but the difference between eye, a d eyelash?  Doubtful!

The cutest thing though... If you ask her what the dog does when she's hot she'll start "panting".
