Baby rolling over yet?

OK...my kiddo is 3 months now. I stopped keeping track of weeks FYI. She has no signs of even trying to roll over. Is anyone's LO rolling over yet, and how early did they do this?

Re: Baby rolling over yet?

  • DS is not rolling over yet and shows no signs of trying either, he was 3 months on Saturday. I like this chart from Baby Center that shows milestones from months 1-6. It looks like anywhere from 4-6 months they should be able to roll both ways.

Unless she is months and months behind on development I don't think you have anything to worry about. Sometimes I think when a baby rolls over really early, it is just an accident and they aren't really aware of what they are doing.

  • DS rolled belly to back for the first time on Saturday night.  He was 3 months on May 24. He did it after bathtime, then we tried all day yesterday to get him to do it again so we could video it.  No dice.  Then, after his bath last night, he rolled over like it was no big deal.  Apparently the only way he's going to roll over is immediately after his bath when we're not ready for it lol!

He rolled from his back onto his side once a few weeks ago but I think that was accidental.

Everything I've read says that the rolling over milestone doesn't necessarily happen as early as it used to because babies sleep on their backs, so they don't develop certain muscles quite as early.  I will say that DS gets a ton of tummy time, which may be why he rolled shortly after 3 months.

ETA:  He wasn't showing signs of trying until the end of last week, so only a day or two before he actually rolled.

  • DD showed no signs of trying to roll over until last week.  I have had her doing tummy time for awhile and she has been able to hold her head up pretty well.  Then all of a sudden last week she tips her head to the side and rolls from tummy to back.  It surprised me and I think it surprised her too, then of course I tried to get her to do it again and she didn't.  She has done it maybe 3 or 4 times, but I don't think she has really become aware of it yet.  I noticed that she has done it at times when she is most alert and has the most energy.  She is almost 14 weeks.

  • Not even close, and she HATES tummy time. I finally bought this really annoying moving ball that plays songs etc. I put it in front of her so she "forgets" she is doing tummy time and found it has helped-I at least get her to do it a few minutes without balling now :)

  • no, nothing.  He won't even use his arms to push himself up.  He uses his back to flex, and his legs and head goes in the air.  He looks like a fish out of water :/
  • Isaac doesn't try to. The only time I've seen him do it is when he is mad he will roll from his back to stomach from kicking. So he has never really rolled over on purpose. I just think he will get there eventually. Isaac is 2 1/2 months.

  • DS Started trying to roll onto his back at 2.5 months and was able to do it every now and then by 3 months. I thought it was odd especially with him being premature and all, but he is not a fan of being on his belly when he is getting sleepy. His doc was surprised also, but said usually by 6 months or 6 months adjusted they figure it out. I wouldn't worry at all, because those are just guidelines

My mom said I had no interest in walking when I was little, when other babies were wobbling about.  Then one day I just got up and took off.  Babies all do what they want when theyre ready.

  • Hannah tries, screams, and then screams more until I pick her up or she falls asleep :)
  • There were like three days around 2 months that she was rolling from belly to back - she'd push herself up on her arms and push over - but she hasn't done it since!  I keep waiting and she's trying, but there are no results!

  • Funny you should ask! Yesterday he went front to back twice! Soo cute. He was in a Pavlic harness until last week, so we were worried about his develpopment being affected.

Not yet.  She will be 3 months on the 15th.  I have to watch her though because she will lean a little and she gets rolled on her side.  I want to say with DD1 it was closer to 4 months when she actually rolled over.

Do you have a link to the annoying ball? I could use one, too. As of late, tummy time consists of him lying on his stomach with his head to the side and shoving all but his middle finger in his mouth-- no joke. It's definitely a metaphor for how he feels about tummy time.

Alexander hasn't rolled yet but he's been getting on his side a lot lately. He really flips his legs up and around in ways he didn't do before. I know it's going to surprise the hell out of him the first time he does it. I can't wait to see the OMG-What-Happened? look on his face.

My LO rolled from tummy to back starting at only 2 weeks, but after a few weeks she couldn't do it anymore and hasn't seemed like she is even trying to in ages. She is starting to throw her weight around more and has gone from back to side, but no rolling. She is 3 months old today!

  • My son can roll both ways at 3 months (back to belly is intentional, I think his belly to back is still an accident but he has a huge head that just flops him over), but that's pretty early.

My daughter was around 4.5 months to roll back to belly. She'd done belly to back accidentally a few times around 3 months but not too much.
