Baby Showers

Repost from oct bmb: appropriate # of items on registry?

Is there an appropriate number of items to have on a baby registry?  I'm a FTM so I am in need of a lot of things and want to give people who have been asking us what we need options, but I don't want more then I need or to seem greedy?

Just wondering if there was etiquette for this or if it depends on the size of the shower...  Thanks for your opinions.

  • You should put on your registry whatever you plan to buy for yourself.  The amount of items doesn't matter.

  • I have two registries, one has 40 items and one has about 55 items, all in varying sizes and price ranges. I didn't really pay attention to how many items I was putting on either, I just put what I think we'll need. Whatever isn't purchased as a gift will be purchased with the completion discount after.
  • every registry is different... register for the items you would buy if you were the only one buying them...

the target registry says the avg registry has

    23 in the $0-10 range

    15 in the $11-30 range

    23 in the $31-50 range

    15 in the $50+ range

between 2 registries we have 95 items on ours

  • The appropriate number of gifts is exactly what you would, given the opportunity, purchase for yourself.  Don't pad your registry because some pimply faced, early 20's BRU saleswoman says you need 6 items per guest.

THis.  Just register for what you think you want/need.  I do recommend having a variety of prices, but unless you have champagne tastes and will only accept gold plated baby bottles - this isn't hard to do w/ baby stuff!

  • As long as you have a good range of prices and lots of stuff for guests to choose from, it doesn't really matter how many items are on the registry.

  • Between our two registries I have something like 115 items (quite a few are cloth diaper covers on Amazon).  Price ranged from pacifiers ($5) to swings ($150).  I would say on average people spent $30-$50, though there were a couple of people that bought $100+ gifts (the swing and a bedding set).
  • Between my two showers I probably had about 50 guests and I had about 100 items on my BRU registry.  About 20 items were actually bought off the registry by guests, and DH and I bought some of the remaining things, and several other things we got from other places.

There were definitely things on the registry we would have liked but could live without, like an exersaucer, extras of a couple of things like bibs or boppy covers, etc.  We had things that cost less than $5 and a couple things that cost more than $75.

So, don't 'pad' your registry with things you don't actually need, but you don't only have to put exactly what you would buy on there, just put things you would like and think you'd use (without going nuts), make sure there is a range of prices and make sure there is at least as many items as you have guests, if not about x2 the guest count.

This.  Also, add things with various amounts- so ppl dont feel obligated to spend a ton if they cant afford to

  • Agree with PPs that it should be items you would buy for yourself. I think we are at around 60, and many of those are things like cloth diapering items and rewashable wipes. I did add a couple of "cutesy" things for the baby, but they are also things I'd buy as little impulse items, and I know that some people shopping on registries like to have a cute item or two to throw into the cart.

Honestly, when you get the completion discount, you'll probably end up buying some of these items anyway.

  • I have about 74 items on ours.  I'm hoping to purchase some of the big items (car seat, pack and play and stroller) within the next couple of weeks before the invites go out for the shower (my mother and mother in law are hosting).

I did not put everything on there.  I purposefully left of things like nasal aspirators, first aid items, bath products because I wanted to purchase those on our own.  They are small and affordable and can be bought over time.
