Mouthfull of Acid Reflux at night! YUM!

Hi. Last night, and a couple of nights last week I have woken up with a mouthful of acid reflux or downright vomit in my mouth in the middle of the night. I gag and there is nothing I can do to clear that awful taste in my mouth.  I've been taking tums before going to bed hoping to prevent this, but it doesn't seem to help.  I have elevated my body/head a bit more, but that's hard on my back/hips... is there a medication that is longer lasting that I could take before going to bed that would help prevent this middle of the night inferno?

Re: Mouthfull of Acid Reflux at night! YUM!

  • I actually have this same problem and my doctor put me on a medicine that I take twice a day that helps BIG time with how bad my acid reflux is.   Which the med she gave me is pretty much pepcid.

  • I've been having this for the past couple weeks - and basically every time I eat. It doesn't matter if I'm sitting up or laying down, either. I burp and just get all this acid. I'm going to talk to the OB about it next week.

  • I've used Zantac and Pepcid AC and I find that it works a lot better than Tums. I tried Tums when the store was out of Pepcid and it basically did nothing unfortunately. These were both on the list of prenancy approved medications that my OB's office gave me as well.  I find that they can last up to 12 hours for me, but there are times when I need to take them twice in a day.

  • This happened to me the other night as well. I woke up feeling like I'd vomited lava in my mouth, it was so disgusting. I would like to know some remedies as well!

  • This happened to me just the other night and I wound up sleeping sitting upright against the wall...HAHAHAHAH!!! DH woke up and asked what I was doing so I explained. He asked if I had taken one of my Zantac's and I said yes so I laid back down and it didn't happen again. I took one last night as a preventative before going to sleep and it worked like a charm. So if I were you I would give the Zantac 150's a try to see if that helps. They work in about 30min so they are quick.

  • I was having a lot of trouble with acid reflux for awhile, and I ended up monitoring mine mostly with diet. First - eating watermelon regularly helped a TON... I go through about 1 watermelon a week now, but it helps with heartburn as well as swelling.  I also have been serving dinner earlier in the evening, and if I get hungry later, I try to make sure I eat light, usually fruit.

  • I talked to the OB Nurse just now and she says I should try either zantac, pepcid or prilosac.  I think I'll stop by the drug store today and get some. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • There is Prilosec OTC, which is over the counter. I'm not sure if these others are prescription or not, but there is also: Zantac, Pepcid, Nexium, and Protonix. Also not sure which is the safest during pregnancy. I would definitely check with your Dr or MW.
  • I take prilosec at my Dr's suggestion.  It works wonders.  Absolutely no heartburn, etc -  all from one tiny pill I take each morning, and so far nothing breaks through it - even the things that would have given  me tons of problems before (broccoli, Starbucks mochas, etc).
  • Yes. I am on max strength pepcid and Zegerid and still wake up choking on my acid. I have to sleep in the recliner, its the only thing that give relief.

  • I take a Zantac in the morning and before bed. It's the only thing that has been getting me through. GL!
