Feeding themself with a spoon?

I didn't think they should be doing it this young, but just got an email that I subscribe to about it. I feel like DS would ram it down his gullet still lol. Does anyone's LO attempt to feed themselves with a spoon? When should they be doing this? One website I just read said you can start letting them practice around 7 months ... oooops. :)

Re: Feeding themself with a spoon?

  • Haley just started wanting to do this. She is still not sure about too many solids (texture issues) so I give her both. She still wants to feed herself and gets mad if I do it. So I fill the spoon, hand it to her and she puts it in her mouth herself. Usually then she chews on the rubber part of the spoon a little bit and hands it back to me for more. It is SO messy but I figure she has to learn sometime. Maybe it's because of her texture issues that I don't worry about her, she won't shove anything into her mouth. Even like shredded cheese or puffs, she holds in her fist and nibbles a little bit at a time.

  • I usually don't give him a spoon, because mostly he eats finger foods himself.  When I do feed him with the spoon, sometimes I let him hold it (which he chews on it and almost chokes himself) sometimes when I put the spoon to his mouth he will grab on and guide it to his mouth.

I would just let him play around with it sometimes.

  • I've tried with Myles but he tends to stick it down his throat and gag on it. So either I feed him or its just his fingers.

  • Yea, no. I don't see this happening for a while. I'll let her play with the spoon, and she'll chew on it but she's no where near ready to feed herself with it.

I figured around 16-18m, even then I've seen kids primarily feeding themselves with their hands.

  • LO isn't doing purees anymore but things like applesauce/yogurt he will let me spoon feed him a little, but mostly wants to do it himself. It's a giant mess and he doesn't get much in his mouth but he is getting better.

Even if I hand him a pre-loaded spoon he gets it everywhere. Over the weekend he was using his toast to dip in the yogurt after he threw his spoon on the ground lol. He will also stick his fingers into whatever and lick/suck it off his hand. He is lacking in table manners Wink so no 5-star restaurants just yet.

We started because he was so grabby when we tried to feed him.

  • Auden won't let me feed him anymore, so if he has something that needs a spoon (think applesauce or potatoes) he will feed himself.  I put the food on the spoon and he will get it in his mouth, although it is quite the mess!  :)

  • Ha! My kid can't figure out her fingers some days muchless a spoon.

I do give it to her to play with if I have the time and am in the mood for a mess. She usally just looks at it, grabs it, licks it then throws it promptly on the floor.

  • I load it up and he puts in his mouth. He's no where near ready to load it up himself. I have to keep the bowl away from him or else the bowl will get tossed!

  • We've been giving DS a utensil (spoon or fork) at dinnertime for the last month or so.  He really just plays with it and usu puts the wrong end in his mouth.  Occasionally he'll get the right end it and we usu clap and say 'yay' to encourage him.  I'm not really expecting anything from him for a long time yet.  I also read it was good to start giving it to them and decided there was no harm in it.  LO does no do purees at all and only did them for ~1 mo before he wouldn't accept me feeding him.  I mainly gave it to him so he'd kind of "know" what flatware was!
