Feels like a dumb question: for mommas who've had babies

How timeable were your contractions? I've been having contractions for a good couple hours now that haven't broken 15 mins but they are the most painful I have experienced so far. Mainly the question is, how EXACT was the timeability of your contractions. I say 15 mins but they are really anywhere from 12-18 mins apart. Is that considered timable?

My OB and prenatal teacher both mentioned using a stopwatch to time contractions vs. a regular watch which makes it sound like they should be pretty exact where mine aren't. Maybe these won't turn into anything but if they do, or for future reference, just how exact is this supposed to be?

  • I would consider your contractions timeable.  My contractions started at about 10 mins apart but they would vary between 8-12 mins.  I had false labor in which I was having timeable contractions every 8-12 mins but after 4-5 hours they would go away.  Once they are timeable and are getting more intense and are closer together progressing to 5 mins apart, that is real labor.  GL

  • My contractions were never more than 3 minutes apart, and it was usually about +/- 30 seconds from there. My midwife's barometer was more of how intense they were than how close they were, though. I had one night of false labor with hours of 2.5 minute apart 1 minute long ctx which ended up fizzling out. They were quite painful and I had to focus on them, but I could talk through them. Once real labor hit there was no talking through them!

  • Mine started around 8-10 mins apart then because 5 mins apart and some increased in intensity but not much.  My doc office followed the 5-1-1- rule meaning 5 mins apart, lasting at least a minute for an hour.

Oh and I didn't bother with a stopwatch, I don't even own one I found a free app for my phone so I wouldn't have to worry about writing anything down.

  • Some people don't get "timeable" contractions until it's time! With my first pregnancy, going into labor was very textbook. My contractions started and were 8-10 mins apart and ask the labor progressed they got stronger and worked down to 2 mins apart lasting 1 min for 1 hour before I headed to the hospital. This pregnancy was very different. I had contractions, strong (like made me shake) but they were like 15 mins to 30 mins apart. I happened to have a doc appointment with my OB that day. When I got there he said I was 5cm dilated. I had to drive to my high risk doc's hospital which was about an hour and a half away. The contractions came on more frequently as I got closer to the hospital, but they never truly got timable. When I made it to the hospital I was 7cm. I had my little girl within the hour!

Every pregnancy is different. Trust your body.

  • I was induced this time, so they immediately started at 90-120 seconds apart for 45 seconds each.

With DD, the started at about 15-20 minutes apart and gradually over the course of the day increased to 4-5 minutes. It's more an approximation of how long. It's not like clock work, but there's a definite pattern.

    Good luck!!!!

  • Mine started a few an hour, then every 15 mintues. my water broke and they were about every 7 minutes, then soon after they were less than 5 minutes apart. It all happened pretty quick, and there was no mistaking labor pains once they got closer together.
  • Mine were never consistent.  They'd be 4-8 minutes apart for an hour, then 8-12 minutes apart the next hour.  They were always 60-90 seconds long.  The main thing I noticed was the intensity increased to where I couldn't talk or walk through them.  I ended up at the hospital at 6cm without ever meeting the 5-1-1 criteria.

  • Mine were within a 1-2 minutes, but once I got under 5 minutes apart they were pretty steady, never more than a minute apart in difference, if that makes sense.

I don't want to scare you but I had contracts 10-20 minutes apart - pretty painful - for days :(  They got horribly painful at 10-15 minutes apart, and I was in early labor like that for almost 24 hours.  They got closer and closer together after that, but it took another 17 hours before it was time to push. If you can sleep, sleep!!!
