XP: Clog and supply

I posted this on the BFing board but it pretty much sucks trying to get a response over there so I'm checking with you ladies as well :)

I have a massive clog right now - started yesterday and nothing I've done is helping.  I've tried massage, hot compress, hot shower (even took my hand pump into the shower with me), hand expressing, nursing on all fours, pointing his nose at the clog, always starting a nursing session on that side - I've had him nurse on that side more times than I can count today.  He nurses for a few minutes, gets a small letdown and gives up because nothing else comes out. I'm going to pick up some lecithin tomorrow.

I've now been pumping for about 3 hours and using a hot compress and then trying to hand express and I've gotten a total of 1 1/2 oz, most of it from the other side.

I'm seriously worried that this might affect my supply if I can't get it out soon.  I'm not ready to wean!!  Anyone have any experience or words of wisdom?

Re: XP: Clog and supply

  • I have dealt with clogs the whole time I have been pumping. My only advice is to keep at it. Sometimes they are stubborn and won't come right away. Give yourself a break though. I know it hurts and you want it gone but sometimes taking a breather from it and going back to it and doing all those things over again will help.

Oh and another trick I use sometimes is filling the tub with warm water and laying in it so that my boobs are soaking. I try that for 10 mins then pump (or nurse) and massage.

  • I was in the same boat just a few days ago. I tried everything. An LLL consultant told me to fill a bowl with warm water, add a tbsp salt for each gallon, and put my breast in the water while leaning over a table for ten minutes or as long as i could stand it. She said to have someone rub my back with knuckles going up and down close to the spine. I do not know if that is what helped, or if taking lecithin helped, but the next time i nursed I did the football hold and that did the trick. Clogs are awful:( Good luck and keep at it.

  • The couple times I've had a really bad clogged duct I lost my supply. One was so bad that he started refusing to nurse. So for a week I didn't nurse (because he would just cry if I tried) and I pumped and I pumped and I pumped. After a week and a half my supply was back to normal and I was able to get him back to the breast. He was hesitant at first but once he realized there was milk he was ok with it. As far as removing the clog I would just keep at it. Use warm water and massage and pump/nurse and take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. It stressed me majorly when I all of sudden wasn't able to pump more than an ounce of milk every few hours (normally I could get 6-10) but do your best to take deep breaths and relax. The more you stress the more it affects your supply. Good luck!
