My son is in love with the word "poopy"

He picked it up from an older cousin and just won't stop using it.  Saying "poopy face" and "poopy head".  Telling me he's going to poop on someone's head or face or where ever.

I know you're supposed to ignore these things, but I feel like I can't.  It sounds so disrespectful.  I know he doesn't mean it the same way an older kid or adult would, but gah.  Just stop saying poopy!

I've tried TO and explaining it's not nice.  He sometimes will correct himself, but not always.

Sorry to say it only will get worse. It actully was only a limited topic in our house before my oldest started kinergarten. Everything is "poop" or "stupid" right now. Obviously the younger brothers pick up on it too. We have "potty" word free zones where the talk is not allowed, it gets pretty bad when they are with their friends though.

  • I don't have any advice for you, I can only commiserate.  My kids think that poop is the funniest word ever and crack up whenever either of them says it.  They eventually got it that they weren't allowed to say things like "poopy head" and have mostly stopped saying that.  At least when I'm in the room.  I sometimes hear them talking when I'm in a different room calling everything "poopy" and laughing hysterically.

  • "Poopy" was DS1's fave word, too, around that age. Besides it not being nice, I just got plain tired of hearing it. So, I started what we call "The List," which keeps track of things he's not allowed to say. Totally did the trick. We still use "The List" to this day.

  • DS is obsessed with "punch" and constantly talks about punching people. Thankfully, he's never been a hitter and that isn't his first reaction when he's upset or angry, but I just don't like him saying it. It sounds mean and I don't want other kids to feel threatened.

We tried ignoring it for a while, but then it became nearly every other word out of his mouth.  So...we began time outs if he says it. He gets three strikes, then a 3 minute time out. We had days when he was in the corner 3-4 times for it over the course of a day, wherever we happened to be when he said it.  Yup, I'm the mom who finds a corner at Target.

It's been about a month since we started that and it's gradually decreased to 2 or 3 time outs for that in the past 2 weeks total. He usually stops at the 2nd time warning now that he knows the consequence.

  • DS went through a poppyhead phase. He would say "hey poopyhead" it sounded really cute the way he said it but it was not acceptable. He replaced it with dude. So now he says "hey dude" we really built it up and made a huge deal when he said it. Now poopy head only comes out infrequently. Sometimes he say hey po-dude and catches him self.

  • DS used to love that word too.  He said it constantly for a long time, I think he also picked it up from his cousin.  I haven't heard him say it in a while, other than telling us that he has to poop.  It's a phase.

Awesome.  Well, I'll try with the poopy free zones and see if I can convince him not to call the stranger at Costco a poopy face.

  • We went through a really bad "poopy" phase too. We decided that since poopy was a potty word he could only say it in the bathroom, worked like a charm! My son and my nephew would go into the bathroom together and scream it and say it all they wanted. It got pretty boring for them after a while, and the poopy talk has decreased drastically since :)
  • DD started doing this about two weeks ago. I just ignore it, it'll pass. The bigger deal you make of small things like this, the worse it is. Pick you battles, you know? ;)

Ah, that's a great tactic.  I might try it if me asking him deadpan if he needs to poop every time he says it doesn't work.  I am hoping taking the fun out of it might work.

I am starting to learn that.  It's a bit easier when they are tiny and don't try to control the universe so much.

  • yeah - its very popular here too.  All the kids in her class are all poop/all the time.  I think its just a phase and figure she'll outgrow it in another year or two.  If she were a boy, she'd probably never outgrow it!  We try to ignore it most of the time.
